Dean Statement Condemning London Attacks

Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean issued the following statement:

"I join all Americans today in offering my condolences to the victims of today's vicious terrorist attacks in London. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their friends and their families. We remain steadfast in our commitment to defeating those who threaten our freedom and values. At a time when world leaders were working together to help make our world a better place, these terrorists were plotting to disrupt that effort by killing and injuring innocent people. We will continue to stand with our allies around the world to defeat terrorism and protect our liberty and freedom."

I always try to be supportive of good dems who are doing what's right rather than complain about what he/she didn't say.

4. as i too join in grieving for today's victims of violence in London and

their families ... one gripping hole takes hold of my heart... that is
the need that in see in my heart to correct the statement made by tony blair, howard dean, probably george w. bush and others who say, "At a time when world leaders were working together to help make our world a better place,.." my heart tells me that that is a tilted statement for as long as there is an IRAQ OCCUPIED BY THE UNITED STATES AND OTHER WORLD COMMUNITIES, world leaders gathered in Scotland were not laboring to make the world a better place... the were laboring to make only one half--maybe three quarters--of the world a better place ... my heart grieves for that blindness of thought, as much as it grieves for the victims of today's violence in London and for the victims of the violence that we perpetrate on Iraq, Afghanistan, and other places in the world.

12. Smart statement...America isn't ready for it all, yet, and Dean knows it

I like the statement, actually. He didn't undermine his own party or his cause and still produced a statement in which the talking heads can find no ammunition. I like how Dean injected the "prayers" into the statement (a refutation of the Dems = immoral atheists argument). He also included the buzzword "world leaders" which I really think is a wink and a nod to the left, who had to refute the unfortunate John Kerry flap about "more leaders" during the election cycle. (Remember that?) Perhaps I am reading too much here, but these times deserve a lot of reading between the lines.

I would, of course, disagree with the argument that the terrorists are against our freedom and values, but unfortunately the American people are not ready for a statement like "they hate us because we took over their countries in CIA-funded military coups and have never let them have self determination ever since so we could control their resources and stategic positions on our neato Risk map." Perhaps someday Americans will accept the truth, but that time is not today. Dean was smart, here.
