Not only are people who get killed powerless themselves to effect policy, and thus, innocent.

Because of the terrorist (a term we've yet to define, I mean I doubt that this is a monolithic group) our leadership uses them to destroy our Constitutional rights.

39. And he's so smooth at it.
"You're onto something important when you mention WMDs, Sean. That's the reason we need to work on homeland security and deal with the $100 billion shortfall after spending $200 billion in Iraq." (Paraphrasing)

He's so right, too. And in typical fashion, AFTER something happens they'll start on "security," always locking the barn door after the horse escapes. And if it's a WMD launched from a ship, they'll stop exports and imports to/from our ports and our economy will crumble.

43. "Doesn't this prove Bush was right" was the Right's talking point
Everything got spun by those jerks around to , "doesn't this prove Bush was right?" No logic needed, just: This is evil, Bush said we have to get evil doers, Bush was right."

God even when there is a real tragedy, a real danger, a real threat, all they could do was spout Republican talking points.

Clark wouldn't go there with them, he wanted to make several important points instead, so he used his time to make them.

You can't resort to military responses to everything was a point Clark made. Police work is what is needed now to trace the links to who was responsible

Terror is now a franchise operation was another. It doesn't need to be directed from afar by some elaborate organization, the skills and the model are out there now.

Trying to protect America by spending 200 Billion dollars fighting in Iraq won't work, was a BIG point. Clark showed the hollowness of "fighting them there so we don't have to fight them here".

This is an ideological war was something Clark chose to focus on. It is a war of ideas, it has to be fought on that basis, We need to coutner act those who say God wants you to murder.

We underfunded homeland security by 100 Billion Dollars while we spent those 200 Billion in Iraq, another point.

International cooperation to stop the spread of WMD was the last point Clark got to make while the music was rolling and they were pushing him off camera. Clark ticked off International treaties and organizations that the United States needs to work closely with.

Wes did well, he did wince at Hannity.

Hannity wanted to get Wes to say that Bush was right to go to Iraq. He had two points to make tonight - we are right to use serious efforts to extract evidence from Gitmos detainees and we are right to go to Iraq.

Wes ignored him and got in the important point that we spent $200B in Iraq and are $100 B short in US on homeland security

...It's almost like saying to a boxer, I'm glad you set him up for that left hook of yours, but you shouldn't have dropped your right and let him land that jab on you.

These "interviews"/combat are fast and furious. Us arm chair quarterbacks can each come up with something we could have said better, but if we were in the middle of that brawl probably the other guy wold have landed 8 punches while we were thinking of it. I'm sure Hannity is kicking himself right now ( or did during the break) for giving Clark so many chances to make his points. Clark made a lot of them.

49. Found this about the Aspen Conference

Hey there. I'm up here in the high mountain country attending a big bipartisan sit-down at the Aspen Institute's stunning Colorado campus. I arrived late last night as fireworks illuminated the shadowy ridgeline and the explosions reverberated off multiple mountain faces. By morning, I had trouble catching my breath because the country out here is simply beautiful beyond words.

The Aspen Institute is having a gigantic week-long big-think jamboree out here, and it is a remarkably bipartisan venture. I'm hoping to do a little liveblogging from various events here, including a couple different discussions with appropriately diverse views about the future of the Supreme Court. Tonight is David Boies and Ted Olson with Chris Matthews moderating.

Hannity Tries To Spin London Attacks As Proof Of "The Wisdom In Why Bush Went To Iraq"
Sean Hannity came up with a novel, if incomprehensible, way to spin yesterday's attacks in London - by claiming they prove Bush did the right thing by invading Iraq.

>snip
Clark immediately showed himself to be several cuts above the run-of-the-mill FOX military analysts who are so hawkish, they have probably already appeared on other shows advocating why the London events prove we need to invade Syria, Iran and God knows where else.

Instead, Clark figured out a way of turning around Hannity's nonsensical "questions" and used them to his own advantage. Clark said Hannity was on "to a very solid point" by talking about WMD's, that the London bombers seem to be a very localized group, but we have to make sure they never get WMD's.

Hannity, seemingly pleased that Clark appeared to agree with him, said, "That's why we take it out of the hands of Saddam when he won't abide by the world community. That's the wisdom in why Bush went to Iraq." (Comment: Another incomprehensible feat of reasoning, but mental acuity has never been Hannity's strong point.)

Clark, having lulled Hannity into complacency said that rather than look at what has been done, we need to talk about what to do now. He then went through a laundry list of to-do items that Bush has so far failed to do: "Strengthen the nuclear non-proliferation treaty, the UN inspection regimes, working on biological weapons treaties and inspections, chemical weapons treaties, We need to work to isolate rogue states."

Attention all Democrats: You can learn to get your talking points in, too.

61. Okay...
That sounds like the interview I saw!

And, also -- a big thanks about the info on the Aspen Ideas Forum.

Sounds like a great thing for Wes to speak at and attend. Wouldn't you LOVE to attend a forum where a number of great thinkers go and share Ideas? -- I could do without the RW-ers, truthfully (Toni Morrison and Wes in one place would be Nirvana for me), but if it is set up to be a BIPARTISAN sharing of ideas, what better place to pick their brains than in a place like the beautiful Aspen, CO, over a few days of schmoozing. Knowing Wes, he came away with every RW-ers brain picked clean! LOL!

Thanks, everyone, this is a wonderful thread!

62. well, I still didn't see this but I quite liked this analysis
that I received via email with an invite to forward it on....

General Clark shined on Hannity and Colmes. Here is a summary of General
Clark's major points that he made starting with what he said to Alan Colmes:

1) He first told Alan Colmes that the Brits have done a wonderful job as our
allies and he commended them.

2) He said that a complete investigation of the facts of the London bombing
was needed by police and law enforcement first before a military response.

3) He said that there are al Qaeda copy cat organizations and we do not know
if there was any central direction involved in this attack.

4) He said that we need to take away the extreme terrorist ideology that God
approves of terrorism and bombings. He said that is a responsibility of the
Islamic community and must be done more at home and abroad.

5) He said that we have to invest more in homeland security and mentioned
that we are about $100 Billion short on that here in this country while we have
invested about $200 Billion in Iraq so far.

6) The last key point that he made to Alan Colmes was that you cannot depend
on military action abroad (in Iraq) to insure that you do not have a threat at
home!

This was the end of the interview with Alan Colmes. Now we go into Sean
Hannity's loaded questions of his trying to justify what Bush did in Iraq.
Hannity's whole line of questioning was about weapons of mass destruction and trying
to justify the "wisdom" of why Bush went to war in Iraq!

Gen. Clark handled Hannity is a completely masterful way in my opinion. He
did not play Hannity's game and get sidetracked into a debate about why we
initially went to war in Iraq! Here are the main points that Gen. Clark made to
Sean Hannity:

1) He mentioned a danger of local terrorist cells having the sophistication
to do what they did with weapons of mass destruction such as the London
bombings.

2) He made the best point to Hannity by saying that we need to talk about
what we need to do NOW rather than why we went to Iraq!

3) He then went on to say that there are lots of things that we need to do to
go after this and he named all of these things that need to be done right off
to Hannity:

A) Strengthen nuclear non proliferation treaties.

B) Strengthen United Nations inspections.

C) Strengthen chemical weapons and biological weapons treaties and
inspections.

D) Isolate rogue states.

That is where time was up and the interview ended. As Clark started
mentioning this list in answer to Hannity's question about the "wisdom" of Bush going
to war in Iraq, I thought I heard Hannity sigh in frustration under his
breath. Please check the tape for that if you taped the interview! Hannity was not
able to get another word in on Clark after Clark went down this list of
things that need to be done!

Clark maintained full credibility and composure of himself and he did not let
Hannity's stupid questions about trying to justify Bush and the Iraq war get
to him. Clark turned everything that Hannity said into his own brilliant
points and observations to the clear frustration of Hannity from what I could see!

This is why Clark being on FOX News is such as good thing. Clark had to have
made a very positive and credible impression to the many millions of moderate
and impressionable red state voters who happen to regularly watch FOX News!

I just wish that Clark had more time on FOX News to get his message across
because this is the right message from the right person at the right time......

Clark is above partisanship, he is completely credible, he does not mind if
people disagree with him on issues and he will not question their patriotism if
they do, and he stays right with the facts about what he is talking about....

63. On yesterday's Hugh Hewitt Show, Hugh was going to get Clark but...
he asked the guys around him in the studio what they thought. One toadie piped up with "He has like 3 different stances on the war in Iraq"

Hugh decided not to try and interview Gen. Clark.
