Be Clever, not Angry......
A Former Irish Protestant Terrorist gives this advice on Niteline....

Terrorism will fail because of the futility of the action....

But if we over react, if we (the Capitalist West) get angry instead of dealing with the real problem, then the process will be long, deadly and counrproductive to the Western (American) Way of life...

The author of Imperial Hubris also stated that the way to approach this is to look at why the terrosist are attacking us. He claimed that the idea the terrorists "hate our freedom" is just plain crap. They hate that we are standing in the way of them taking control of their countries and resources....

Richard Clarke agreed in kind but resorted back, sad to say, to the idea that we must never give in to the terrorists....

Good show.

Note Ted C was a child in London durring the German raid of WWII

1. My only problem with what he said was
that Capitalism defeated Fascism, then Communism, and now Capitalism must defeat Terrorism.

I have a problem with that line of thought on many levels.

2. Fascism Defeated Capitalism and Democracy on December 12, 2000

It's not capitalism what a cartel of robber barons buys the government.
Fascism is *using* terrorism as a tool, as usual.

5. That's where his side is coming from
The Unionist/loyalist side is pro-British, pro-capitalist; the republican/nationalist side is leftist/socialist.

Over there, the pro-British side uses the terms "Democratic" and "Progressive," which is confusing to us. In our terms, they're not "progressive"; they've been willing to fight for the status quo of being linked to England.

David Ervine, though, shows some promise, and his party is willing to go forward and share power with nationalists/republicans. His party (Progressive Unionist Party) is not as hardline as Ian Paisley's Democratic Unionist Party, which rejects power-sharing.

3. I saw it--he did really well & made some great points.
I wish they'd taken time to explain his side--pro-British loyalist--since most viewers in the U.S. have probably only heard of the IRA & think the struggle's about religion, Protestants vs. Catholics.

6. This is one example where our MSM has failed to educate us
Edited on Fri Jul-08-05 09:12 AM by CoolOnion
The failure of the MSM to do in-depth reporting is part of the reason our nation paints all "terrorism" with the same broad brush.

The Good Friday Agreement was a milestone in the history of conflict resolution; the Irish people on both sides were ready to come to the table and work together. The "terrorism" there is very manageable, because their are no irrational suicide bombers--both sides have a political cause that can be mediated by a third-party.

Where was the MSM when this landmark agreement was being signed? Talking about blow-jobs in the Oval Office, of course.

Now, we have Condoleeza Rice, who--in her confirmation hearing--made a statement that all "terrorism" is the same and there are no "political" reasons. I can't find the exact quote, but I remember thinking at the time that it was the most ignorant statement I've ever heard from someone who's about to become Secretary of State.

Our nation has a long way to go towards being "clever."

7. He had some simple, common sense comments
suggestions for the U.S. to consider. He said "no thesis required" to understand.

Clarke responded, unfortunately with the Big Daddy Because I Said So brick wall attitude that is undoing America.

Anyone got the TRANSCRIPT?
