General Clark compared to Ashley Wilkes by OxyMoron Rush. Very Odd.
Rush "OxyMoron" Limbaugh (R-AssCyst) posted this on his website:

I don't listen to him or read his site, except that this came in my Clark "Google Alert" and I dared click on it.

It seems the OxyMoron is trying to compare General Clark to Ashley Wilkes, for some odd reason. To make his case, he picked this quote from the General on Fox:

CLARK: This needs to be a discussion about religion, about God, about the Koran, and about what God expects of His men and women and children on earth -- and it's going to have to be argued out within Islam. Those of us who are not Islamic are not going to be able to participate directly in this dialogue, but we've got to hope it occurs and we've got to give support and encouragement to those who believe as we do that there's just no excuse for murdering innocent people. That's all it is. It's a crime. It's horrible, and it's got to be stopped.

He pretended to interpret this quote as the General advocating only "a therapy session" and "a meeting."

A few questions:

Is there a scene in Gone With the Wind in which Ashley advocates a therapy session or meeting with the Yankees?

When Ashley Wilkes voluntarily enlisted, was there a fat cheerleader for war on the sidelines, whining about anal cysts to get out of fighting?

The main thing about Ashley Wilkes' character is that he represented the Old South (which was "gone with the wind") and its difficulties adjusting to the new union. Is the OxyMoron saying General Clark represents the Old South and wouldn't fight for the country?

The other thing about Ashely Wilkes was that he was sexually effete, particularly compared with Rhett Butler. Is Rush judging General Clark's sexual power, and if so, why? Is it part of a new "lifestyle choice?"

Who is Rush's Rhett Butler -- the Chimp? Rove? Cheney?

Obviously, the OxyMoron is a bit threatened by General Clark. Not that we can blame him for that.

Yes... he uses it every time he wants to criticize Wes. Usually NewsMax runs it for him, and he just pops in a new "outrage" that Wes has committed. But, it's been around a while.

Shouldn't they leave evaluations of men's sexual attraction to people who are attracted to men?

But maybe the comparison makes them feel better, casting themselves as the dashing Rhett who didn't enlist.

10. I think Rush thinks that
because he didn't drag Scarlet up the stairs and "ravish" her like the chickenhawk "Rhett" did, that qualified him as a "wimp".

The fact that he was any kind of a wimp, and he was from the South, and he was military made him a good choice to pin on Wes.

That's the ticket! Maybe he dresses up in full skirts when no one can see.

could it not be based simply on a slight physical resemblance? Looks like Rush took it and ran with it.

Yeah, I know, weird, but there's no logic in the way those people think. I, for one, was unaware that good cheekbones implied wimpiness.

Methinks they're scared of Wes, and that's all they have to work with.

15. F**k Rush Limbaugh
Clark was shot four times in Vietnam. He was 1st mech ID. Here's a piece from Wikipedia:

The next month, February 1970, then 25, Clark was wounded by a sniper in the jungle. Ambushed by the Viet Cong, Clark was shot four times (in the right shoulder, right hand, right hip and right leg) before he could find cover. He managed to shout commands to troops, who launched a counterattack and defeated the enemy force. Clark's wounds were treated, and he was flown back to the United States to recuperate at Valley Forge Hospital. There he saw his new four-month-old son, Wesley Jr., who had been born in his absence. He also was awarded the Bronze Star and Silver Star:

"As the friendly force maneuvered through the treacherous region, it was suddenly subjected to an intense small arms fire from a well-concealed insurgent element. Although painfully wounded in the initial volley, Captain Clark immediately directed his men on a counter-assault of the enemy positions. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Captain Clark remained with his unit until the reactionary force arrived and the situation was well in hand. His courageous initiative and exemplary professionalism significantly contributed to the successful outcome of the engagement. Captain Clark's unquestionable valor in close combat against a hostile force is in keeping with the finest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army."

So that's where they're going to put most of their behavioral conditioning.

That is when they're not pushing their "Hillary is Running" nonsense.

Of course they will just say again as they did before that Clark is just a stocking horse for Hillary.

27. One of the many things I find to be odd about
the repukes, this fear of thinking. My impression is that the repukes consider themselves to be the party of logic, while we are driven by emotion. The sexual implications were always in the background as well, as in the feminization of the American male by liberals.

And yet in reality they are nothing more than emotional cheerleaders for this administration, nothing more than driveling hypocrites reduced to ad hominem attacks on any who oppose them. Little whimpering scaredy cats afraid to debate the issues based on fact.

Wes should take a page out of Zel's book and challenge Rush-a-billy to a duel.

And after all, he couldn't compare himself, Bush, Cheney, Wolfy, Delay, or any of the other Chickenhawks to Ashley Wilkes ~ Ashley Wilkes put on a uniform and fought in a war ~

As a woman, comparing Rush to Gen. Clark ~ wow, no contest! I think Rush has spent his life feeling inadequate which is why he became dependent on drugs and feels the need to attack men who are attractive to women!

42. Ashley Wilkes represented Family Values. He was

engaged to Melanie when Scarlett decided she wanted him and he spurned her advances. He once kissed Scarlett but he was otherwise faithful to Melanie until her death. I wouldn't count the kiss against him, considering the circumstances (the War, Reconstruction, Scarlett throwing herself at him for ten years or more.)

When Melanie died, Scarlett realized she didn't really want a gentleman like Ashley, she wanted a roue like Rhett Butler.

I don't think Rush knows anything about being a gentleman but he's no Rhett Butlet, either.

46. That's right - Ashley Wilkes had a moral sense of faithfulness to his wife
and honored his marriage vows. Wilkes was willing to put his life on the line for his cause, however misguided the cause of the South might have been. Rhett Butler was a man with no honor or sense of obligation to anyone but to himself (although he did change into a decent family man towards the end). Initially, Butler was a war profiteer and blockade runner. I guess it's no surprise that Rush would prefer a war profiteer over a man willing to risk his life for the cause he believed in.

44. Leslie Howard also played the title role in The Scarlet Pimpernel
a foppish Regency nobleman in reality is a spy who smuggles out potential victims of the guillotine from France

he also starred in a 'modern' (early 40s) remake of the film

and a movie about an aircraft designer

he died on a plane shot down by the Nazis...the plane was not diverted (although the British knew it was targeted) because alerting the plane would inform the Nazis that the British had broken their code

Howard was my favorite actor when I was younger, that's why I know so much about him.......also in the relatively early days of TV, a lot of 'old' movies were shown in the late afternoon....many starred Howard

I was furious that the British could have saved him and didn't....now I better understand the demands of war

I think a prominent US woman singer was also on the plane shot down.....and didn't the British also know Coventry was a target and decided not to put in extra protection because doing so would reveal that they had broken the Nazi code???

"Is there a scene in Gone With the Wind in which Ashley advocates a therapy session or meeting with the Yankees?"

No, not quite. He does realize that going to war is a fool's errand. He does fight, of course, since his way of life depends on it. But he's a realist and knows what war is; he wishes the Yankees would let the South go without bloodshed.

(The scene is early in the movie and takes place at the Twelve Oaks barbecue when the men retire to the study to talk of the coming war. Just before Scarlett throws the cupid at the fireplace in the study.)

On edit: the Wesley Clark and Ashley Wilkes comparison is yet more code-speak to a base that has lost all reason.

49. Why? Three reasons.
1. Partly to see if anyone's heard it before, and if not, to make people aware it's going around. (I learned that it's an old meme, not a new one.)

2. Partly to figure out what they're trying to do with this meme -- apparently, it's about portraying the Four-Star, Silver Medal, Purple Heart, former SACEUR as a "wimp."

3. Partly to make fun of it, and have others do the same -- along with responding in other ways -- to prepare a response. And I think the posts here have been great on all counts.
