We’re at the Democratic Presidential candidate forum focused on issues critical to women. (It’s sponsored by Lifetime Television -- I’ll let you know when we find out when this is running on Lifetime.) Its the first ever forum focused on women's issues -- and Dean coming here with less than two days to go in New Hampshire shows, in itself, how deeply he values our responsibilities as a country to work towards women's equality. To see him talking about women's issues this morning, see the CSPAN video here.
Dean is talking right now about his focus as a Governor – and the focus he will have as President – on children between the ages of 1 and 3.
As President, Howard Dean has laid out several things he will do for women in this country.
He will deliver on issues of importance to women and all Americans: health care, child care, education, jobs, and aid for small business. He will help the 14 million women-owned businesses in the United States by creating new financing and easing paperwork requirements. His health care plan will save small businesses $12 billion a year.
He will support pay equity, so that women receive the same pay as men for comparable work.
He will support medical research to find new cures for breast cancer, cervical cancer and other deadly diseases.
He will ensure that women have access to reproductive health care and family planning services, including insurance that covers contraceptives on an equal basis with other prescription drugs. He will defend the right to choose and appoint federal judges with a proven track record on equal rights and privacy.
He will help working parents by expanding access to child care and preschool, and amending the Family and Medical Leave Act to allow parents to spend more time at their children’s school.
He will address the squeeze on family finances that has driven debt to record levels and caused more American women to declare bankruptcy last year than graduate from college. He will stand up to predatory lenders and help families save for their futures.
He will rescind the Bush Administration regulation that denies overtime pay to eight million nurses, secretaries and other American workers.
