6. I'm sorry, but "hand counts now" was not really Andy's position.
Edited on Sat Jul-09-05 04:16 PM by demodonkey
Andy was smart as a whip when it came to what was achievable and how to get there. The last time I spoke with Andy (evening of Friday July 1), we discussed the issue of hand-counted paper ballots. As many on here know, Andy was bitterly hurt in the past by some of the people now calling the hardest for nothing but hand counts.

Andy said that calling for nothing but hand-counted paper isn't a realistic goal for the foreseeable future. He said we need to work to stop the counties from buying more paperless DREs under HAVA and we talked about efforts by citizens in my state (PA) to get some of our bad machines decertified.

We talked for a few minutes and then the nurse came into his room and he had to say good-by. I remember this call so well, because it is the last time I ever spoke with my dear friend Andy Stephenson.

So if you honor Andy's memory, yes, definitely do work hard for Election Reform. Take whatever position you think is right, but please if the position is 100% hand-counted paper ballots take it as your own and not Andy's.

Marybeth

13. Please don't put words in Andy's mouth.
100% hand counted ballots was not Andy's position.

It's fine if that is your opinion, but it was not his.

18. I know for certain it was his preference but I will say that it wasn't his
ultimate position. He preferred hand counts but saw it as unattainable as I understood his position. I did share some online conversation with him and thanked him numerous times for his efforts.

I only wish that we could honor his memory by continuing his fight to insist on fair and transparent election reform.

My position is Paper ballots and Hand counts.

I believe that ultimately as someone else here in this thread confirms Andy's preference was also Paper ballots and Hand counts.

19. Andy wanted Paper Ballots Hand Counted
I am not putting words in Andy's mouth, he just didn't believe we could have gotten them, Andy and I bickered back and forth (and man did we bicker even to the point of calling each other names). But Andy respected my position. And I respected his.

12. Thank you, Marybeth, you are absolutely correct about Andy's position.
I was going to respond earlier, but have been kept quite busy helping Ted and Andy's Mom here locally with service arrangements.

You so eloquently stated exactly what needed to be clarified. If people wish to work for all forms of election reform in Andy's memory, that is wonderful, but please be certain that any specific positions ascribed to Andy are, in fact, what he believed.

Not to disparage what other people's positions may be, Andy's position was most certainly NOT 100% hand counts.

16. Please give Ted and Andy's Mom a BIG hug from me...
...His mom may not remember me; I talked with her from the JH hospital waiting room during Andy's surgery when we were all pretty nervous. But she is such a DEAR.

And especially give dear Ted HUGE hug and tell him that Marybeth in Pennsylvania is still thinking about him -- and Andy -- every minute.

11. Andy.... we don't want your sacrifice to be in vain.
I never got really involved in Andy's situation because of the inability to know one way or another someone on the web ... and there was so much else to get done. I prayed and hoped that he would make it, though.

I am sorry that Andy has been sacrificed by a country that doesn't care about the average person's problems. I am sorry for my own lack of involvemet in his situation and I commend those of you on DU who were there for him. I read the posts sometimes and it seems that if I were Andy I would have felt grateful to DU for their kindness.

22. Since we all vote at precinct levels....
Paper ballots would not be that difficult to count. There are not that many votes cast in precincts that we must have computers to keep track. They could input the totals into computers after handcounts but the guaranteed backup would always be there at the precinct level. That would be an excellent memorial to Andy Stephenson if we could accomplish that.

23. Uh, have you ever worked as an election official?
I have and with 30 races/issues on the ballot and 500 voters that is over 15,000 votes to account for. And this will occur after a 13-17 hour day by mainly 70 year plus people. Hand counts will add on another 3-4 hrs possibly, maybe more in larger precincts.

26. We did it literally for CENTURIES! They do it in the most progressive
and democratic countries in the world without massive fraWD today. Switzerland is a great model to look at. You are throwing up smoke screens with disingenuos arguments. I am willing to wait for a honest vote count; aren't you?

28. Yeah, in countries where one race is on the ballot
it's easy to go through one race after an 16 hr day. Most countries don't have the amount of elected offices, ballot iniatives, judges on the ballots as the United States does. Try 30 or 40 ballot items. Who says an honest count is not possible via a paper ballot and tabulator type equipment?

And it's disengenous to say this will eliminate fraud.

have you ever worked an election as a judge or official? How do you prevent overvoting?
