Dear Senator Lugar:
I do not often feel compelled to write my representatives in Congress. Ordinarily, like most Americans, I am content to get on with my life, go to work, earn a living, pay my taxes, and vote periodically when it's time to elect someone to represent my district, state, or country. Mostly I watch the news, read the papers, and keep my thoughts and opinions to myself. Not any more. Now I've had enough. Now I've sworn to become more active in what is happening around me. The state of affairs in this country -- to my perception -- demands it.
Today, I am writing to express to you my extreme outrage upon learning that President Bush's closest political advisor, Karl Rove, had the temerity to engineer the exposure to public view of the identity of a covert CIA agent, Valerie Plame, and the 10-year long CIA intelligence operation in which she served as a participant. I am particularly incensed because this thoughtless, dastardly, and thoroughly unpatriotic act was perpetrated by Mr. Rove, as has now become apparent, solely out of personal spite, in a brainless,ham-handed, but nevertheless organized effort to discredit a report delivered to the CIA by Ms. Plame's husband, Joseph Wilson, which challenged -- correctly as it turns out -- numerous Bush Administration misrepresentations to the effect that Saddam Hussein was trying to purchase uranium from the African country of Niger prior to the Iraq War.
Whether Karl Rove has committed a crime or not -- something which the outcome of a pending grand jury investigation will determine -- is to me presently irrelevant. What has become clear is that Mr. Rove, at the very least, negligently or thoughtlessly "outed" Ms. Plame for no other reason than to discredit her husband, Joseph Wilson, and the truth that he vainly tried to bring to the CIA's attention, during the intense media blitz manufactured by the Bush Administration in the run-up to the Iraq War. That War, as it now turns out, was sold to the American people on the basis of government intelligence that was "cherry-picked","fixed", "sexed-up", or "hyped" (depending on what colloquialism you may deem appropriate) by hucksters in the Bush Administration. The result has been a disastrous war, costing this country dearly in lives, maimed bodies, and financial treasure. Most recently a lying and incompetent Secretary of Defense has told us that we may be involved in that War for possibly another twelve years. Prior to the War, he told us it would be a "cakewalk" that would be all over in a matter of months. Sadly, Mr. Rove's actions with respect to Ms. Plame and her husband were totally in keeping with the past and ongoing pattern of deception that has characterized this lying and duplicitous Administration.
I believe Senator Lugar, that it is time for you to get off the fence. It is time that you said more about this. It is time that you held people accountable for their lies and incompetence. At the very least, you should raise your voice and say something meaningful about the slimy hatchet job that Mr. Rove worked upon Valerie Plame, Joseph Wilson, and this country's Central Intelligence Agency.
Clearly, if Mr. Rove had any integrity he would resign. He should resign because of what his bungling and politically motivated machinations have done to the intelligence service of our country. He should resign because his actions have ruined the career of a loyal public servant in Valerie Plame, wrongly slandered a truly heroic figure in Joseph Wilson, and put in jeopardy the lives of an unknown number of other agents and operatives loyal to this country who relied for their continued security upon Ms. Plame's remaining anonymous. He should resign because he tried to keep America from learning the truth.
I do not expect Mr. Rove will resign. I say this because Mr. Rove has shown that he has no integrity. Therefore, I think it is time that you communicated America's disgust at his actions to the President and demanded Mr. Rove's termination. If the President refuses,I think you should publicly, and loudly, take a stand and insist upon it.
There comes a time when our positions and responsibilities require us to do the right thing. You should do the right thing now, Senator Lugar. You should see to it that Karl Rove does no more harm to our country.
Sincerely,
|
