It is not fairto the voters that the media is not mentioning Kerry's
recent bout with cancer.

Even though it was in the news at the time, not all voters heard about it.

This may not make one bit of difference to people, but they should know about it.

The media is not doing the public a favor in the long run.

1. You know about it. What's the problem?
As far as I know, it's not exactly private information anymore.

2. How about the media mentioning Dean's psychiatric treatment?
Don't hear much about that, do you?

17. Dean said he got "counseling."
That's how people with larger vocabs describe professional "psychological" help.

Dissecting Howard Dean's Implosion

Former front-runner undone by long list of flaws

EXCERPT...

EMOTIONAL. Paradoxically, as private as he is, Dean is capable – perhaps too capable – of showing emotion. When I interviewed him for Newsweek last year, he broke down in tears when I asked him about his lost brother. I had never seen a politician do this: he turned beet-red and sobbed. He told me he had had counseling. It was touching, but, in retrospect, a harbinger of his angry reaction to his loss in Iowa – a fateful moment to say the least.

19. It is very normal to get counseling for loss of a loved one.
This Fineman character sounds like a first class RW jerk.

20. You are correct on both counts.
The thing is, this thread was about media surprises regarding the health of the candidates. Fineman probably thought he'd be dropping this one on Dean come October.

34. Maybe HF needs "counseling". I've seen him go in the hair salon,
ducking glances because he doesn't want people to know he gets his locks tinted.

31. Tell ya what
When you lose a brother, if you can cope without counseling from a licensed practitioner, or clergy... you can call this one, hands down.

Frankly, grief counseling is a far far cry from emotional problems.

22. Catholic confession is also considered counseling
Should we say then that Kerry went to a priest for his "problems"?

Two can play this game.

He spoke about it at the Jefferson Jackson dinner in Iowa. He spoke about what great health care he received as a senator, and said that all Americans deserved such good health care.

7. I'm sorry, but I tell you what...seeing this type of Crap posted at
DU is really pissing me off.

You should absolutely be ashamed of yourself.

It's a non issue and should be for all decent democrats no matter who we support.

I've posted against Kerry too, mainly because of the way he dissed my state with the Tea Cup statement, but I would never stoop into the sewer with such rhetoric as this.

25. Thank You.
"stoop into the sewer". Exactly. What a bad reflection this poster makes on his/her candidate. I'm sure every candidate would absolutely repudiate this kind of attack against a Democrat. Really makes me question this poster's commitment to seeing our Party win in November.

Nixon dirty tricksters are alive and well on posting on DU.

8. Didn't he have prostate cancer?
My understanding is that people usually die of old age before prostate cancer progresses far enough to kill them?

Why would "the voters" need to know about that?

I don't recall a push to inform the voters about bush's mental retardation, so why should this be an issue?

16. Early stage prostate cancer, hardly a cause for concern.
Giuliani's prostate cancer was more advanced. Several years later, he's still fine. Colon Powell just had prostate surgery, no one is screaming that he's gonna die soon. In fact, prostate cancer can be found dormant in most males over age fifty. If you want to call the media on "not doing the public a favor in the long run." Then call on them to focus on the truth about Bush's service record and the bogus link between Al Qaeda and Saddam to name just a small few.

27. I believe he had surgery
which can only happen if it is very early in the cancer, and if they can remove the whole thing. In that case recurrence rates are exceptionally low.

It will come up in the general election if he is the nominee. But I don't think - due to the circumstances - it will be a big thing. They best thing they can do if (when) it comes up - is treat the issue as an opportunity for public health education (eg educating the public) - esp regarding the importance of early detection and the success rate of surgery (getting rid of the cancer) which can only happen if the cancer is caught in the very, very early stages.
