David Gergen for SCOTUS?
I was thinking today...Democrats keep saying that Bush should nominate a pragmatic conservative, not a far right-wing extremist. I was trying to think of somebody that fits that description and the first person the popped into my head is David Gergen.

Although he is a Republican, he has worked in both Republican and Democratic administrations. He seems to be knowledgable of the law, fair minded and he is respected by members of both parties. It would also be nice to see somebody that isn't a circuit court judge.

Anybody else think he would be a good choice?

5. He is a lawyer
From his Wikipedia Entry

David Gergen is a political consultant and presidential advisor during the Republican administrations of Nixon, Ford, and Reagan. While remaining a Republican he also served as an advisor to Bill Clinton.

He earned his bachelor's degree from Yale University in 1963 and his law degree from Harvard University in 1967.

As of 2005 he serves as editor-at-large at U.S. News & World Report and a professor of public service and director of the Center for Public Leadership at the Kennedy School of Government.

9. Who said it was a rule.
But, if you want a favorable ABA rating for the Judiciary committee, I think you'd better be a lawyer.

2. Better than most
But you're thinking way too rationally. Think of the worst, right-wing nut Bush could choose and you're probably closer to the mark.

8. Then let's recall Thomas Jefferson or Ben Franklin...
THEY are the only "Constitutional originalists" I want to see on the bench.

Welcome to DU, RC..
