The political showdown of our lifetime
How many bodies has Karl Rove left bleeding on the hot, cracked asphalt of politics? Working behind the scenes, he has destroyed his opponents - not through the promotion of better policies, but by shameless, no-holds-barred "rat-fucking" that not only targets politicians, but their families as well.

Rove has always won not only because of his genius, but also because of his willingness to do things that his opponents could not ethically allow themselves to do. Looking back on some of the news reports and political attacks from the 2004 campaign, one could get the mistaken impression that Bush was running against Teresa Heinz Kerry and not her husband John. And who else but Rove would have the intestinal fortitude to attack John McCain by spreading rumors that his ordeal as a POW in Vietnam made him mentally unstable?

But now the game is different. In this fight, Rove is not behind the scenes where he is most effective and comfortable. This is no longer a game where Bush can ride the high road and vocally lament the dirty politics of our times while his mastermind Rove spreads rumors about Texas Governor Ann Richards' supposed preference for women, or John McCain's ungodly sexual affair with a black woman.

In 2003, Rove made a gamble. He exposed the identity of a CIA agent to a friendly reporter to retaliate against her husband. Rove didn't get someone else to do it. He did it himself. And because of that, he's lost his greatest tactical advantage - his relative anonymity. No more sitting in the background while his charismatic pretty-boy of a president speaks the words he crafted. More and more, the news cameras are beginning to point over Bush's shoulder, and adjust their focus onto Rove sitting in the shadows along the back wall.

But perhaps an even more important factor contributing to Karl Rove's potential epic downfall is that he is not going up against some lightweight. This is not John McCain, who can be trusted to take a beating and then fall into line like a good Republican soldier. This is Joe "You fuck with my wife I fuck with you" Wilson, and he has been on the attack for two years and shows no sign of letting up.

Even after the White House did a "work-up" on Joe Wilson to prepare themselves for a fight, they appear empty-handed. They have no substance; just half-baked talking points, a laughable parsing of words, and obvious lies as their response.

In the end, Rove might win as he always has. Wilson's wife might be morphed into an agent of America-hating Liberalism who operated within our intelligence community to weaken the United States against the terrorist threat, but was cleverly exposed by the brave whistleblower Karl Rove who would not be swayed by her shameless, lying attack dog of a husband. It could happen. As soon as someone underestimates Karl Rove, they find themselves looking around in confusion, wondering how they could have lost what seemed to be guaranteed victory.

But this time, Rove has to do some of the actual fighting himself. And standing in the ring next to Wilson, he just doesn't look to be in fighting shape.

So come on out, Karl. It's time to start boxing.

5. Roves fight is not in his normal ring of public opinion.
This fight is in the ring of law, not his home territory, and not as easy(I hope) to manipulate.

11. I love how they try to manipulate it though
How long ago was it when Clinton told the world "I did not have sex with that girl" and we learned it was his definition of SEX that allowed him not to LIE.

Now Rove says "I did not say her NAME. . so I didn't reveal her identity."

Why, and I know I ask a blazingly stupid question here, is it evil and slimy for a guy to lie about his personal affair to a media turned gossip mongers but when an employee of the executive branch gives out national secrets that jeapordize the war on terror he uses the tactic of "Define identify" and America says OH THAT IS RIGHT.

Oh and the second excuse--even if I did reveal I didn't know it was a bad thing is just as bad. . .

But he gave up everything else about her. Novack could have drove to Plame's house and taken a picture of her himself after his conversation with Rove. That is the biggest bullshit excuse I've ever heard. :eyes:

Karl's final chapter??

L. Frank Baum

Oz, left to himself, smiled to think of his success in giving the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman and the Lion exactly what they thought they wanted. "How can I help being a humbug," he said, "when all these people make me do things that everybody knows can't be done? It was easy to make the Scarecrow and the Lion and the Woodman happy, because they imagined I could do anything. But it will take more than imagination to carry Dorothy back to Kansas, and I'm sure I don't know how it can be done."
***
Yes, of course," replied Oz. "I am tired of being such a humbug. If I should go out of this Palace my people would soon discover I am not a Wizard, and then they would be vexed with me for having deceived them. So I have to stay shut up in these rooms all day, and it gets tiresome. I'd much rather go back to Kansas with you and be in a circus again."
***
"I am now going away to make a visit. While I am gone the Scarecrow will rule over you. I command you to obey him as you would me."
"Good-bye!" shouted everyone, and all eyes were turned upward to where the Wizard was riding in the basket, rising every moment farther and farther into the sky.
And that was the last any of them ever saw of Oz, the Wonderful Wizard, though he may have reached Omaha safely, and be there now, for all we know. But the people remembered him lovingly, and said to one another:
"Oz was always our friend. When he was here he built for us this beautiful Emerald City, and now he is gone he has left the Wise Scarecrow to rule over us."

15. I just realized what a mysognist Rove is...
all of his targets - the ones directly in his crosshairs - have been woman. sometimes (mostly) the women were used to bring down the men in power, but Rove's pattern uses attacks on women.

I think he plays off of the mysoginist tendencies of the "haters" in the GOP base to get them all in a froth.

18. Oooh, good point
The deep misogyny in conservatism is undeniable, and it plays far too well among many male progressives and liberals, too. Rove plays to the dark side of humanity, and sadly, there's a LOT of darkness in us.

The thread-starting post was great, too, and your post just reproves the point that well thought out and crafted messages spawn great insights.

Personally, I hope this really drags on and on, so we can all be reminded what wicked little tin-horn plutocrats these guys are.

38. well yeah,,
it's bad enough even on DU, a liberal website, where I know woman who aren't comfortable in GD and the Lounge. It does say alot about the darkness in us. But, nothing is as bad as how misogyny lies in conservatism. They would all like to muzzle women, keep 'em barefoot, pregnant, cleaning house and making dinner. Do you know that conservative church organization's actually pay families so that the wife can quit her career and be a stay at home mom. Nothing wrong with stay at home moms, what they do is invaluable, but, trying to buy off women so they can make them all morph into second class citizens with no right to choose how to live their lives is wrong. That blew me away when I heard it.

19. I never really considered that either ...
There does seem to be a pattern - perhaps not just with Rove, but with the Right in general.

How often was Hillary attacked while First Lady? The Rush Right has been demonizing her for the past 13 years. And remember the Rovian whisper campaign about Mrs. McCain? I seem to remember rumors about how she was crazy or on drugs, or something similar.

And of course, Wilson's wife, and Kerry's wife were fair game.

The Teresa and Hillary campaigns seemed centered on the fringe-right fear of a strong, independent woman. Often on the right-wing AM radio, their hyphenated names were emphasized with contempt. HEINZ-Kerry, RODHAM-Clinton as if to say, "you uppity feminazi don't-know-your-place woman," appealing to the worst of the right-wing male psyche.

39. Oh but nobody can merely mention Mary Cheney is a lesbian....
heaven forbid you attack somebody by truthfully mentioning what their sexual orientation is! These women are smart and amibious so that makes them fair game to vilify? It's sick how right-wing men hate that. "appealing to the worst of the right-wing male psyche" is right on the money.

20. Interesting.
The things that Rove has said and done are not that unusual for a politician. Scummy, yes. Unusual, no. The thing that i am the most interested in is that the White House is keeping silent on this. Usually the White House would be trying to put out this kind of fire with every hose available. They are not doing this, however. Could this mean that the White House is going to throw Rove under the bus?

21. Enjoyed reading this very much, Ian!
Thanks for your 'take' on this, I love the framing of it as a political "showdown" (right up georgie's alley!). Great insight.

Poor Rove is at a disadvantage being in the spotlight. His expertise and tactics are most effective in the dark. Dark, dank, dirty, hidden, secret... his preferred environment.

Mr. Rove, please speak up and look into the camera.
Light! We need more light!

23. Rove has had bad experiences with women
Edited on Fri Jul-15-05 08:06 PM by oxbow
His mother shot herself and his first wife humiliated him and told him she never loved him before walking out. No wonder he's a mysoginist.

On another topic, the best thing we can do right now is let the American people get to know Rove. He works best in the dark, and if he was featured on say, People in the News, a CBC special or another biography program, people would find out that everywhere he goes, these kinds of dirty little tricks mysteriously happen. I urge DU to contact the News programs and tell them to do a special on Karl Rove. He has been called the co-president and the most powerful man in America, yet few americans even knew his name last week. Let's shine some light on dear Turd Blossom and see what people think of him then.

26. It's people like Rove who make me question God.
(and I know I'm not the only one). Her we have a man, a vile, despicable man who has done nothing but succeed in life. Not a very smart Evildoer, either. He's more like a one-trick pony.

In the world of crime, his level of accomplishments are not much more than the pick-pocket level, or maybe Somewhat-believable Con Man.

There's just not much to the man. I heard him speak the other day for the first time (Randi Rhodes show). He sounded boring, dull, not sharp or witty in any way.

And yet, here this mediocre Bad Guy moves up in the world, seemingly unstoppable. The path to success and the White House is laying beneath his feet, like a gilded carpet rolled out for him.

In the meantime, I can't cross the street without getting a ticket for jay walking.

27. Suskind: "Why are these men laughing?"
Remember the Suskind article? Why are these men laughing?

http://www.ronsuskind.com/newsite/articles/archives/000032.html

"At the moment when one-party rule returns to Washington—a state that existed, in fact, in the first five months of the Bush presidency, before Senator Jeffords switched parties—we are offered a rare view of the way this White House works. The issue of how the administration decides what to do with its mandate—and where political calculation figures in that mix—has never been so important to consider. This White House will now be able to do precisely what it wants. To understand the implications of this, you must understand Karl Rove.

"It’s an amazing moment," said one senior White House official early on the morning after. "Karl just went from prime minister to king. Amazing . . . and a little scary. Now no one will speak candidly about him or take him on or contradict him. Pure power, no real accountability. It’s just ‘listen to Karl and everything will work out.’. . . That may go for the president, too."

that Rove is not a genius. He's just a jackass who's a trickster. Nothing genius about that. All he does is take an opponent's strengths and switch them to your weakness and bring out the gay debate. :eyes: That's not very genius to me. He's getting what he deserves.

KKKarl's not brilliant except in the criminal sense. He's been playing on the wrong side of the tracks since before he dropped out of college. Only two places awaited him: jail or the College Republicans. We all know who scooped him up first. With any luck the courts will have the last laugh.

36. Wilson has balls....
I respect that. When the Bush campaign attacked John McCain's family he acted a little mad then folded without much of a whimper. 2 years later he was selling the guy's lies to help start a war. 2 years after that he was kissing the guy's ass on the campaign trail at the expense of his supposed best friend.

Now when Joe Wilson's wife was attacked, he got mad and whipped some ass and he's still doing it. For two years, this guy has stood up to smears, lies and bullying and protected his wife the whole time. I admire that. If I'm ever married, I would like to think I could be half the husband that Joe Wilson is to his wife.
