Shays vs. Farrell rematch

Farrell, the 2004 Democratic nominee who garnered 48 percent of the vote against the Republican Shays, said, "The issues are virtually the same today as they were in 2004 - but the problems have gotten worse."

Farrell's campaign against Shays in 2004 was among the tightest the incumbent had experienced during his 16 years in Congress.

Farrell announced shortly after that election that she would not run for a third four-year term as first selectwoman; her term expires this November. She said at the time that she was considering her political options, and mentioned a run for state or national office as possibilities.
