Does language re: "inevitability" of attack here serve political purpose?
Edited on Sun Jul-17-05 06:35 PM by ladeuxiemevoiture
I saw this woman on Fox News this morning and she mentioned (as has been mentioned in stories about the attacks in London) the polls demonstrating that a majority of people believe an attack here in the US is "inevitable" and that just irritates me immensely, for a couple reasons:

1) Life is not predestined! Fate is not unchangeable! You do your best to attack terrorism and prevent it, and hopefully, you avoid any future attacks. If you make excuses, however, that an attack is inevitable, is everybody just going to sit around, waiting for the shoe to drop??

2) It could be argued that such language serves a pre-emptive political purpose, which I think is disgusting, in that I feel it's very cynical to tell the public that something which is NOT inevitable is probably inevitable, so if it happens, it was "inevitable."

Or am I twisting things unfairly?

4. We have a winner!
Isn't the transparency of such a statement amazing. You can almost hear the clicking of the keyboards at the RW noise machines hammering out the talking points before the tragedy occurs. Anybody want to join me in predicting what Faux, Newsmax, Drudge, Rush etc etc etc will say the morning of....

1) Poor President Bush did EVERYTHING in his power to stop the terrorists!!! Those terrible people at the ACLU and PFAW made us VUNERABLE!!!

2) The pinko, liberal Dems watered down the Patriot Act!

3) The "left" hate America!

4) It's Michael Moore's fault!

5) It's also Bill Clinton and Barbra Streisand's fault!

3. Lead up to the attack they are going to allow happen to divert the
attention on KKKarl and his inevitable indictment.

It could be they are just getting the fear fueled up so they can have an attack and say that we aren't as safe as we thought we were. We will just have to attack another Middle East nation, Like maybe Iran?

Meanwhile back in D.C. the KKKarl Rove scandal will wilt in the midst of terra and the nation will become one again, that post 9/11 euphoria for the bu$h regime.

5. Let's not confuse inevitable with imminent -
Here's the inevitable part:
Will some crackpot, home-grown or foreign, do some heinous thing
that kills and injures a number of people at some time in the future?
Can we be reasonably certain? Yes. Well, that's unsettling. Makes us a little anxious.

But, the implication that it will be soon, nay imminent, is rot.
When will it happen? That nobody can say.
And it is that uncertainty that they use to instill fear. And fear is the mechanism of control.

It is in the best interests of those who follow the "strict father" philosophy of society
that the populace be frightened from time to time so that they can keep them in line; a political purpose to be sure.

Your not "twisting things unfairly," but you need to be cognizant that Fox is.
"the polls demonstrating that a majority of people believe"
is the type of illusion that they base most of their "reporting" on. It's straight out of Orwell.
Have you ever heard of them citing a reliable, disinterested source,
except, in rare instances, to deride some "liberal."

Recognize that you can tell the difference, and try to point it out to others,
but don't be surprised if they would rather believe Fox.
They have been indoctrinated in that "strict father" mentality for so long they can see things no other way.

6. I believe that when the terrorists decide it is time to do something
here, an attack is indeed inevitable.

While I certainly do not want to see anyone hurt or God forbid killed...we are one of the prime targets, and some fool will think that by attacking the US, minds will be changed.

It is truly sad that these people think that an attack will do anything but galvanize the nation into resolve, and things will spiral down still further into more killing/maiming.

Someone, somewhere in this nation will do something horrid, and it will be shown that the hoopla about Homeland Security was seriously overplayed.

I, personally, am sickened to think that those who purport terroristic activities, actually think that they will accomplish anything by these acts of cowardice and stupidity.
