This morning ABC and NBC tried to make a big deal that Laura Bush said she would like to see a woman replace O'Connor. ABC even went as far as to ask whether she was talking to her husband or letting the American people know who her husband was going to chose. I knew from the beginning that she was telling the American people what her husband was going to do.
Why does the media try to make this woman more important than she is? The media is always trying to make out like she just does so much. Is the media doing this to try to soften Bush's image among women?
It is not that I do not like the idea of a strong woman. It is that fact that I feel that the media is trying to scam people into thinking Laura Bush is more important than reality shows.

1. Yeah, that was when I turned ABC off this morning. |

I don't recall seeing Laura's name on the ballot.

5. That was my first thought as well...Hillary would have been ... |

crucified.
At least Hillary was a few notches higher on both the evolutionary and intellectual scales.

The media is looking for a counter-Hilary, i.e., a woman with a modicum of power who is also subservient to her husband and who knows her place. Rather than an uppity woman like Hilary, they want to show you a First Lady who is the "real" American ideal - a woman who gets crumbs of influence from her husband's plate by sticking devotedly to his side.

6. What is maybe more disturbing is the contrast |
|
say between how they pump up Mrs. Bush and are extremely open to her taking a role in advising her husband, yet the Clintons were criticized for this.
Maybe it's a sign of progress but it seems more like a double standard.
Since Laura Bush is seen as much more non-confrontational and less ambitious, the media feels it is okay to pump her up, while someone who doesn't need pumping up and shows a desire to have an impact as first Lady like Mrs. Clinton was being bumped down.

7. They are also using Laura...... |
|
to camoflage the dealings of her husband and his cronies. He is out to destroy our pristine wilderness, while she is on tv doing ads to get people to join and donate to preserving national parks!

However, it seems to me that she does not really advise him. It seems that she just goes out and says things that he wants the country to know and the media makes out like she is really helping him make decisions. I do not see where or how she advises him.
