Harry S Truman quote that sums up why the Plame case is important.
Edited on Thu Jul-21-05 11:04 AM by barbaraann
Once a government is committed to the principle of silencing the voice of opposition, it has only one way to go, and that is down the path of increasingly repressive measures, until it becomes a source of terror to all its citizens and creates a country where everyone lives in fear.
--Harry S Truman

1. er...um...eh...um, there's no period after the S in Harry S Truman
Truman has no middle name, but used the letter S just to make his name sound better.

3. I knew it was just the letter S but I didn't know about the period.
Thanks for the info. I fixed it. :-)

14. The line I heard was it was his parents that gave him the S
He had two grandfathers whose names begin with S, so rather than give him one of his grandfather's name Harry's Parents gave him an S for both (or the alternative, by giving Harry's Middle name as S, he could be passed after as being named after either grandfather as needed).

2. This is the best quote I have read in a long time.
I know it's old stuff, but I recommended it for the greatest page. We need to remind ourselves of this statement over and over.

4. Their's another quote, I'm not sure who said it, but it's something like,
"Those who don't know their own history, are Damned to repeat it."

Or something like that, anyone know who that is accredited to?

9. Thanks! When you said Santayana, I though you might be talking...

...about some old Indian sage (from India), but no, he was a Spanish-born, American philosopher. You all should check out some of his quote at this page, he said some GREAT stuff! <http://www.quotationspage.com/quotes/George_Santayana/>

Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.
George Santayana, The Life of Reason, Volume 1, 1905

A man's feet should be planted in his country, but his eyes should survey the world. -- George Santayana

Before you contradict an old man, my fair friend, you should endeavor to understand him. -- George Santayana

7. Truman's blunt aphorisms also apply to W's evasiveness.
Ohhhh. I don't know what to do. It's all so confusing. It's ha-a-ard being president!

"The buck stops here {Truman's desk}." Apparently, the buck never gets to Dubya's desk.

Oh no, people keep criticizing me! They are being partisan and unpatriotic!

11. Oh, here's a great quote form the Great, Carlos Santana
"Peace has never come from dropping bombs. Real peace comes from enlightenment and educating people to behave more in a divine manner." -- Carlos Santana, Associated Press interview, September 1, 2004

12. Amen.
It's too bad most of our politicians, both D and R, insist on being militarists.

15. Another appropriate Truman quote,
especially in view of both the Iraq and Plame scandals, and one to
remember whenever Right-Wingnuts complain about progressive activism:

"I never give 'em hell. I only tell the TRUTH, and they think it's
hell."
