Why does the Rove treason case have no "name" |
|
It needs a name so it can be repeated over and over. The media called it Plame or Wilson but are starting to call it Rove/Plame/Wilson.
We need a pithy name. Suggestions?

1. Probably it has no name because |
|
we don't know what all he'll be charged with yet, and how many are going down.

4. I think it'll have its own name after the indictments come down. . . |
|
As I posted on another thread:
A scandal will hold and Bush will go down when the scandal has its own name. So long as it's trivialized by unimaginative people and stuck with a "borrowed" infamy (i.e., anything with -gate), Bush will skate.
When it gets its own name, then we can begin to explain the full horror to all.

I just call it Rove/Plame Affair, or more simply, the "Plame Affair".
I like "Plame" because I think the use of Ms. Wilson's maiden name may have some significance. Like the phrase "lithe and fierce like a tiger" in Costa-Gavras' great movie, "Z", the use of "Plame" may connect the leaker to a specific source that may enable the investigators to knit the conspiracy together.
So I'll continue to use "The Plame Affair". Simple, and in a subtle way, possibly significant.

15. Nor should we use a perp's name for the scandal. . . |
|
Let's not restrict the scope of the scandal by focusing on just Rove. . . better to bring all BushCo into the fray.

8. I agree, because the name is actually the key |
|
If it was all innocent, like they said, and was just about "Wilson's wife", then why didn't they say Valerie Wilson? Joe Wilson said she uses Valerie Wilson, even at work.
The fact that her name, Plame, was what Novak wrote, means her whole dossier was there. They knew what she was, "Plame" is how we know.

9. Treasongate works for me |
|
It would even work for Poppy Bush, since that's how he referred to anyone who would deliberately compromise a CIA operative's cover.
Poppy and I don't agree on much (Broccoli is the only other issue I can think of), so take advantage of the rare occasion and go with it.

17. How about a name that reminds everyone what's at stake? WMD |
|
Edited on Fri Jul-22-05 04:10 AM by nascarblue
Something that reminds everybody what this is really all about. By the time Queen Melman and the rest of those sneaky republicans stop spining this, many moderates might get confused and/or distracted. So coming up with a name that reminds everyone what the real crime is would be smart.
SpyGate? Cakegate? WMDgate? Iraqgate?

18. I like Traitors Gate. myself but it's sort of hard to give this a name yet |
|
Frankly this is very different and maybe worse than the original "Gate" of which all the other "Gates" were cheap copies.
One problem is that we don't really know what Fitzpatrick is onto. For example, is Rove the primary actor or just a vile little message boy for Smirk and Sneer?

21. no, I think we need a name -- all about branding, as Card would say |
|
Think Whitewater
We need one name - Treason should be in the name - no person attached. I don't like TreasonGate.
I think the press has avoided a name b/c they know that the name gives the scandal staying power.

24. Why does the Rove treason case have no "name" |
|
Because every name that has been tried, someone has a 'problem' with...every name assigned thus far...so instead of it being branded, it continues, unidentified.

Breach is a compact scandalizing word that also links to the actual intelligence breach. Operation implies that it was planned and not a slip or a "correction." Scandal is also a big sticky word that might be used instead of "affair" or "gate", etc.

27. No more Gates, please. |
|
Frankly, the automatic appending of 'Gate' onto whatever the latest scandal is absurd. As someone mentioned, The WaterGate was simply the name of a hotel where events took place, hence WaterGate scandal. But the press has tried making every occurence of scandal large or small since then into yet another 'Gate'.
How about "Spy vs. Lie"?
