That wraps it up for this week. Monday's guest is Rick Santorum. The name brings about a very negative response from the audience. Stewart is a litle surprised. "Well, look who's the welcome wagon," he says to the hisses and boos. That's going to be, uh, interesting... to say the least. And now, your Moment of Zen: Ahnold Swahzeneggah using "I'll be back" in a public speech.

Speaking of stupid, who are some the most unintentionally funny figures in American politics?

You know Rick Santorum? The one who compared being gay to fucking a dog? That's a good one. Who else is good? The entire Supreme Court is pretty funny when they denied medical marijuana when there's a man named William Rehnquist who wrote a dissenting opinion, who's the Chief Justice who happens to be dying of cancer. That must have been a pretty hilarious conversation back in the chambers: "Listen Bill, we know you're dying of cancer but we just can't have you rolling a joint!" That must have been a great conversation.

Stewart treates him the way he treated Goldberg. That would be great. I doubt it though. I'm worried he'll go a bit softer on Santorum because he's actually a senator (though I don't recall previous interviews with other RW congressmen).

The again I wasn't expecting him to whack Goldberg that hard either.I'm hoping it'll be intersting.

As a teacher for the Diocese of Pittsburgh for 14 years, one important lesson I learned was that no matter what I said to the child, whatever the parents said superseded my message. What parents say and how they live sends a message stronger than any teacher's voice no matter what the issue.

Sen. Rick Santorum and his wife have taught their children a powerful lesson on civic responsibility by refusing to pay any tuition money to the Penn Hills School District for their children who attended the Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School ("Penn Hills Loses Bid to Charge Santorum," July 12). Released from that payment on a technicality shows that even an upstanding, moral gentleman like Sen. Santorum teaches his children the following lessons:

1) Take advantage of the system whenever you can.

2) The little guy pays while the rich and powerful guy gets away with it.

3) As a Catholic, you have no obligation to pay your share to the common good in spite of Catholic social doctrine.

Finally, I am shocked that our religious leaders who see Sen. Santorum as some sort of faith-and-morals hero have not spoken up on this issue at all.

I'm hoping he goes crossfire on his ass, but that won't happen

Jon knows that one thing that sets him apart from his right-wing counterparts is the way he treats his guests.

Jon never shouts them down. He never cuts-off their microphone. And if he interrupts them while they're speaking, it's with a joke. Usually a self-effacing joke.

Imagine if instead of telling people to "Shut-up," Bill O'Reilly instead said something silly about himself?

Jon usually practices a sort of verbal Judo. He lets them do themselves in. And when he eviscerates them, they often don't realize it until they watch the show later that night.

Heck, did you see what they did to that Libertarian guy who was giving toy guns to ghetto kids? And then he consented to a second interview a couple of years later. The second interview began with, "Now, before we sit down, I want to make one thing clear. You've seen the tape of our previous interview? OooOOooo-Kay, then..."

He knows that his audience is among the smartest, best-educated demographic-- better informed than readers of the NYT or Wash. Post. He knows that his audience will "get the joke" without the need for O'Reilly-style hysterics.

Keep them calm and relaxed so they keep talking. People are more likely to say dumb things when they're relaxed and feel safe. Who are you more likely to spill your guts to? A funny blond at the bar, or an angry cop who's just asked you to "step outside the vehicle, please?"

Jon knows that getting asshole Repug guests on his show builds ratings. Shouting them down and berating them loudly does not encourage repeat appearances, and it does not encourage other repugs to appear on his show.

I do admire the way he handled himself on Crossfire. He was relentless and savage, but in a gentle, self-effacing way. "My show follows a bunch of puppets making prank calls. It's a comedy show. If that's the standard you hold yourself to..."

That was on THEIR show, not HIS. Jon was under no obligation to be courteous. He wasn't the host.

Watch the two-part interviews closely. The really hard stuff usually comes after the commercial break.

I just wonder what segment he'll do right before Santorum comes on the stage. Remember how Zell Miller had to follow the bit about George Bush blowing the horse? Priceless!

If I were Jon, and George Dubya ever finally agreed to be on the show, I would un-clip my microphone and walk off the set as soon as George sat down.

And keep the cameras running.

The close-ups would be priceless.

Maybe, after an uncomfortable minute or two, send a chimp out to sit in the desk and interview Bush.
