State proposal would cut Medicaid benefits

COLUMBIA - The state of South Carolina has asked the federal government for permission to cut the medical benefits of more than 800,000 of the state's poorest residents, most of them children.
The state's proposal also would increase Medicaid patients' costs to receive medical care.
The Palmetto States proposal has not been reviewed publicly in South Carolina. However, some Washington observers familiar with the proposal say the Bush administration is likely to grant the request.
"This is no tweak," said Kathleen Stoll, director of health policy at Families USA, a Washington-based advocacy group that is tracking requests for waivers from federally prescribed Medicaid coverage submitted by various states. "This is major, major damage to the federal Medicaid program for South Carolina." More.....
