What is going on with the release of the photos of Abu Garib?
If they are not allowing the photos to be released, isn't this the time for the Democratic Leaders to stand up and start screaming for their relase?

1. Do you understand WHY they aren't being released?
I agree, the Dems need to insist on the release.

Welcome to DU :hi:

2. Yes, I do understand, that is why I don't understand why
the Democratic leaders are silent yet again on something like this.

3. The Dems don't want to be put in same same position as Newsweek.
It is possible that these photos are of children. That would be a reason for a Democrat to be reluctant to insist on release. The reaction is going to be appalling. Just like "Newsweek" the Dems could be blamed. Totally twisted but that is the reality.

4. If they are of children it is all the more reason
they should be released. The DoD has had three weeks to redact identities. Let's get moving on it. Let's be appropriately appalled.

5. And if there are bombings as a result? Who will the Repuke Media blame?
It won't be Bush that's for sure. It will be the Dems who insisted on publication.

8. By hiding the truth we always end up worse in the long run

Fine. Blame the Dems for exposing abuse. All for it.

onedit: Not strictly analogous to the Newsweek case, where testimony was in dispute. They are photos.

11. And if more Dems lose their seats?
And Repuke power increases? One thing many Dems have learned over the last bitter five years is without power they are powerless.

12. Dems lose seats because Republicans have ignored abuses?
I don't get the logic.

7. Sad but true
Maybe someone like Conyers will be brave enough to step forward and make some demands.

6. The Bush administration needs time to let everyone know
about how it is reforming its military intelligence apparatus and training interrogators to do their job properly. There was a front-page article in the LA Times this morning entitled "Army Puts a New Face on Interrogations." Sorry, I have no link. I subscribe to the hard copy but I don't read it online because I don't want to register.

9. The truth needs to come out and the Democrats need to be
able to COMMUNICATE what these photos really mean. If the Democrats cannot do this, then what is it that they can do? This administration is behind the interrogations, This administration is trying to hide what has happened. So far, they have succeeded in hiding many things and the Democrats have allowed it so that they won't be accused of "politicizing" the situation, they need to stop reacting to these situation with fear.

10. IMO the importance of presentation is extremely over-emphasized
The photos and videos tell the story. If they are politicized, so be it. If they show what reports say they will, it is something that needs to addressed ASAP, and no one will need to be told what they "really mean".
