Roberts Mum on Federalist Society Membership
Roberts Mum on Federalist Society Membership
July 25th, 2005

The WaPo has reported the John Roberts has indeed been listed as member in the Federalist Society. However this morning Roberts declined to explain “why he was listed in a leadership directory of the Federalist Society. ” The White House reverberated that stance, that Roberts’ has no recollection of belonging to the Federalist Society.

Roberts, nominated by Bush last week to replace retiring Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, was asked by a reporter about the discrepancy during a morning get-acquainted meeting with Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif.

He smiled but didn’t reply.

Evidently niether Roberts or the White House is interested in coming clean on this revelation that was first reported after Roberts was nominated.

2. he can't remember?
in an msnbc article this morning:

"Supreme Court nominee John G. Roberts Jr. has said that he has no memory of belonging to the Federalist Society"

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8683445/

GIVE ME AN F'IN BREAK! He can't remember if he was a part of this society, yet he was on the board?

Oh, yeah, we want him on the supreme court.

3. Of course he's a member of the Federalist Society...
The Federalist Society is the primary advisory source for Republicans seeking court nominations (having overtaken the American Bar Association, which was deemed "too liberal," since it doesn't take many personal vierws such as religion into account). The idea that Roberts is NOT a member of the Federalist Society is beyond the pale. In fact, if he were (and he is), I really wouldn't see that as a damning problem. The problem is in thhe mans personal views and their ability to affect his legal judgement, not his membership in any particular group.

7. Offhand, I'd say...
Because the Bush administration has learned that the less the public knows about what it does, the better
