Mark Warner - prez contender in '08 or Senator in '06?

(Angus Reid Global Scan) – Current Virginia governor Mark Warner holds the upper hand in a prospective election to the United States Senate, according to a poll by Rasmussen Reports. 48 per cent of respondents in the Old Dominion State would vote for the Democrat in a head-to-head contest against incumbent Republican senator George Allen.

In a poll conducted in April, Allen had a four per cent lead over Warner. Support for the Democrat increased by five per cent in three months, while backing for the Republican dropped by three per cent.

Warner won the 2001 gubernatorial election, defeating Republican state attorney general Mark Earley by almost 100,000 votes. Warner decided not to seek a new term in the election scheduled for Nov. 8.

Allen was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2000, defeating Democratic incumbent Charles Robb with 52 per cent of call cast ballots.

Allen has announced he will seek re-election in November 2006. Warner—who has been mentioned as a possible Democratic presidential nominee in 2008—has not finalized a decision on next year’s upper house contest.

Allen is horrible. Perhaps a Senator who was a Governor of a southern state would have a good chance. But, let's wait until 2012.

Stay OUT of the Senate! It seems to be the kiss of death to all candidates!

Americans don't understand how wthe Senate works and every vote can be touted against any Senator who runs a national race.

I like Mark, and I think he could be a great candidate in 2008!

He was my Gov. when I was living there past couple years, he'd make a great Senator, not prez material. Too cool, not enough charisma. JMHO.

He should consider a run for presidency. Hey, if we're going to run a moderate, we may as well try to win. Hillary would be the biggest disaster.

I'd still like to get a clearer view on the war and foreign policy from him. He sounds like a competant and well accomplished governor though.

Mainly because I can't forgive him for attending Bilderberg and that way I wouldn't have to hold my nose and vote for him should he be the nominee - but I would like it if Virginia had a Dem senator.

of him running for senate in 2006. If he decides not to run for president in 2008 or fails to win the nomination... He will run for Governor in 2009.

I remember reading someone's comments after NickDemshop posted something about him once, and they said that he "couldn't speak well at all".. :o ..I'm starting to think whoever said that confused him with the Republican "Senator" Mark Warner?

It's mind-boggling how a Democrat can have as much crossover appeal as he has in the red state of Virginia.

He was proud that his state had been selected as the "best managed state in the nation for 2005" by the Government Performance Project. I looked up the results.. VA is the only state to get an A. http://results.gpponline.org/States.aspx

His Lt. Governor wants to see a Warner/Clark ticket in '08.. .. I don't know if the general plans to run again, but yeah.. this guy is running! He's pretty open about that. I have a feeling he'll be a top contender.

They want Hillary or Kerry. U.S. Senators are easy targets. Looks like Warner would be a nightmare for them!

Warner stands a good chance at the Prez and there is no use in running for the senate. He seems a little conservative for me -- must be a DLC'er.
