What’s up in the Senate?
I tuned in late. The gist from what I can see is, on the table was something over $400 billion dollars for the war that was to be voted on. That is being tabled for gun liability. This has caused quite a stir amongst democrats. My question is, is there something in this war budget that the republican don’t want debated? Now, like I said I tuned in late so they may be upset over a bologna sandwich.

1. They (Republicans)
wanted to get the DOD thing done so they can concentrate on the more important issue of the NRA. The Dems gave them a hard time about it, so they tabled it for now.

3. The Senate did not invoke cloture on the DoD Bill
so the Senate can now debate it endlessly and add amendments that the reconciliaiton committee will then take out in the middle of the night without notifying anyone. (sigh!)

And yes, they Rethugs have gone weeks, maybe months, without passing NRA legislation. They were starting to go into withdrawal. Nothing, not support for our troops, not the need to get more equipment, not veterans benefits, nothing can be allowed to getin the way of a bill the Gun Lobby wants.

Your 109th (weasel) Congress at work.

2. The Democrats filibustered the DOD bill...
...because they still had amendments they wished to offer. Cloture would have forced all amendments to be germane.

Instead of allowing full debate on the DOD bill, the Repubs wanted to rush it so they could get to work on the no gun manufacturer left behind act.

4. They also hoped they could avoid voting on the amendments
concerning interrogation techniques and tortures, by classifying them as non-germane.

As the Dems did not allow the cloture to happen, the Republicans moved to the guns bill in order to avoid this subject.

5. Thanks to all who answered my question.
It is greatly appreciated. I got in on the furor and not what caused it. So on one hand is what our troops need to stay alive and win this war of choice. On the other hand is what the gun lobby wants. Well I see the republicans know who signs their pay checks.
