Mark Crispin Miller: None dare call it stolen
http://www.freepress.org/departments/display/19/2005/1383

None dare call it stolen - Ohio, the election, and America's servile press
by Mark Crispin Miller, summarized by Mary Anne Saucier, Columbus, Ohio
July 24, 2005

While commentators, prompted by Republicans, claimed Bush won the 2004 election through the votes of a silent majority concerned with “family values,” Mark Crispin Miller writes that when voters were asked to state, “in their own words the most important factor in their vote,”only 14 percent named “moral values.” He details how the press (except for Keith Olbermann on MSNBC) ignored “the strange details of the election—except, that is, to ridicule all efforts to discuss them…It was as if they were reporting from inside a forest fire without acknowledging the fire, except to keep insisting that there was no fire.”

Then he lists the copious evidence pointing to a stolen election, easily available on the web or in paperback, from Michigan Representative John Conyers’ report, Preserving Democracy: What Went Wrong in Ohio. More than dirty tricks, it covers “the run-up to the election, the election itself, and the post-election cover-up,” listing “specific violations of the U.S. and Ohio constitutions, the Voting Rights Act, the Civil Rights Act of 1968, the National Voter Registration Act, and the Help America Vote Act.”

The Conyers report details the disenfranchisement of Democrats through “intentional misconduct and illegal behavior, much of it involving Secretary of State J. Kenneth Blackwell, the co-chair of the Bush-Cheney campaign in Ohio.”

28. Did you catch this?
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=1976616&mesg_id=1976616

or here's a direct link to the democracy cell project for the picture: http://www.democracycellproject.net

Who knows what is in this picture? Proof of anything? Why do they say "special ballots?"

Maybe it means nothing or maybe something.

And while we talk about dirty tricks, what was done with all the voter registrations and the provisional ballots? WERE they handled properly?

Time to get the parties (particularly the CORRUPT REPUBLICAN PARTY out of elections and the corporations out of elections and the media too!)

5. Did you bother to watch Countdown with Keith Olbermann
after the election? If you had, you would know that his reports were not "30 second snippets".

Oh, and by the way, welcome to DU. Stick around and learn some stuff.

10. "Olber-Hype" Was Better Than Nothing
Every word he spoke on the election irregularities was proof that we
were not crazy. And he kept at it even after the Ebersole plane crash,
which I found inspiring. He had Zogby calling for an investigation of
the exit poll discrepancy, which was important.

He dropped the ball on Bev Harris and Clint Curtis. And then he seemed
to quit after the electoral votes were counted, and I stopped watching
him but AFAIK never addressed the statistical evidence assembled by
USCountVotes or Bev Harris's hacking of the optical tabulator in FL.

17. I don't think Mr. Olbermann dropped the ball on Bev Harris...
He might have liked to drop something on her, literally.

From Mr. Olbermann's blog:

"One final note here. I should clarify what I wrote in this space last night about Countdown’s interaction with Bev Harris of Black Box Voting. My staff is not certain that any of our messages to Ms. Harris inviting her on the show since the week of November 15 have specifically asked her for permission to play the videotapes of her work trying to audit the Florida vote. We think so, but I’ve got only three people booking all the guests on this program, and they each probably make about 100 calls a day.

Complicating our effort is the fact that even as we hoped to provide a platform to publicize and illuminate her efforts, Ms. Harris had returned none of the messages left on her own voicemail by Countdown staffers since she spoke to our staffers briefly, twice, during the week of November 8. Only today did she even get back in touch with us, and was so belligerent, threatening, and demanding, that we have chosen to withdraw our invitation to her to appear, or to have videotape of her efforts played, on Countdown.

Threats against myself or my staff will not be tolerated. We are not only busting our humps on the voting irregularities beat, but we remain the only mainstream news organization to continue to cover this vital story. These are my people — they are running professional risks I can’t begin to describe — and I will stand up for them, first, last, and always."

20. Correction
Bev Harris dropped the ball on him.

Since she had no actual evidence, she decided to pick a fight with him and blame him for the problem.

Bev also pulled the same stunt with folks like Mike Malloy, Randi Rhodes and almost every anti-BBV activist in the country.

4. Read the whole article in this month's Harper's
It's a pretty good summary of the incredibly brazen election-rigging that went on in Ohio, under the auspices of Kenneth Blackwell. Blackwell and his minions should be in jail.

6. Whole read is in this month's Harper's Magazine. Check it out at your
local bookstore...while you drink your cupa coffee...or eat a cookie.

Buy a copy and donate it to Starbucks so that the Coffee folks can read a REAL STORY while they sip.

The cover is: Three Monkeys: "See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil." :D

11. While You're Waiting for the News Stand to Open
Read this on the Ohio irregularities:

"In the hands of a merely corrupt political party, a bad election or two
would be no big deal. But these clowns we have in power now imagine
themselves to be revolutionaries, and their psychology is a lot like
that of the leadership of Enron, pre-meltdown—with each passing day that
they get away with it, they become more convinced by a delusion of
righteousness."

24. EXCELLENT article!
Mark C Miller nails it...and doesn't let the "servile press" off the hook whatsoever.

This is the article to give to anyone who doubts the level of monkey business in Ohio. The full version is on the newsstand now--in August "Harper's." Miller is also releasing a book in October called "Fooled Again--How the Right Stole the 2004 Elections." It should be a huge help in getting some widespread support for election reform.

:applause:

he got into Coingate a little and was giving the press hell for not covering any of this stuff, or not in time to do any good.
