House action now!!! The Rs are pulling something in regard
to the Medical Malpractice law. Barney Frank is raising hell. Something to do with rules and unanimous consent.

1. Medical malpractice amendment: Repugs put an amendment in
to insinuate drug companies won't be liable for any drugs approved by the FDA regardless of whether their drugs are killing people. Franks claiming it's an abuse of power. Go, Barney!

pretty heated debate.

Lawyer fee caps is a good idea. Cut the greed for the pros and settlements wont be so high.

26. No they aren't
It's been solidly proven that capping lawsuit awards doesn't do anything to malpractice insurance. That and how will a corporation actually feel accountable if the MOST they have to pay out on a case is $500k? That's pocket change for a lot of big companies that end up doing bad things and are on the receiving end of said lawsuits.

28. Agree
Companies will just factor the amount of the capped penalty into the cost of developing the project. When you buy the drugs, you'll be paying for their cost to settle any lawsuits while they keep selling bad drugs.

3. Called my congresswoman
The staffer knew very little but I voiced my opposition in that the cap is too low, and the physicians will see ZERO reduction in their premiums unless there is an accountability component to audit the insurance companies/cap the premiums.

This is just a big giveaway to the insurance companies, the HMO's and the pharmaceutical companies. This is NOT to protect docs.

5. Too right you are.
I was watching a bit of it and, Anthony from NY (?) was very eloquent in his speech blasting this bill. He had facts and figures of how this is not working in states where it is in effect. He also brought to light the Rs would not let this go to committee (I think) he said if it had he would have the facts and figures for last year. Basically he said what we all know this bill is against the citizens and for big business.

6. Raul Emmanuel up now, talking about Merck and VIOXX.
They want to slip this in so Merck doesn't have to answer or pay for deaths due to Vioxx when not all research was provided to FDA to prove the product was unsafe.

13. The Rep two step again, and our boards are tied up
with prolonged discussions on whether or not a man we already know to be vindictive, petty, uncouth, and egocentric may have flipped off his propaganda squad.

24. Damn, it's so important this not be blessed; it impacts
everyone and gives the drug companies carte blanche w/o fear of reprisal. I hope Michael Moore is paying close attention, if only to include this in his new documentary.

25. As the bill stands, it is one of the most horrendous
pieces of shiite that is being forced onto us. It basically puts a liability shield in front of all health care providers, drug companies, med equip manufacturers. And it does NOTHING to deal with med mal as an issue. NOTHING. This is another, describe the problem really well, then propose a solution that has nothing to do with the problem, but ends up as a corporate giveaway to the insurance and pharma industries.
