Original message
Hackett v. Schmidt:
ON IRAQ & PATRIOTISM:

Schmidt: "I'm glad to hear my opponent finally say he stands with the president."

Hackett: "I not only stood with him - I fought for him," shot back Hackett, who returned in March from a seven-month tour of duty with the 1st Marine Division in Ramadi and Fallujah. ...

----------------------------------------------------------------------

ABORTION

Schmidt: "...would love to see" the U.S. Supreme Court's landmark Roe v. Wade decision ...

Hackett: . "... we need to keep abortions safe, legal and rare!" "Don't tell me how to live my personal life and don't dictate to my wife what decision she makes with her doctor." ...

"I don't want the government in the bedroom any more than I want it in my gun safe or telling me how to worship." ...

----------------------------------------------------------------------

ECONOMY

Schmidt: "We're on the right path, all we need to do is keep moving in the same direction. The key question is, how can we create more jobs in this very diverse district? The president's policies will do that."

Hackett: (who opposes permanent tax cuts) argues that Bush's economic policy;

"(It) darn well isn't working, ..(added that OH-2 has lost thousands of relatively high-paying manufacturing jobs), .... If you think America is on the right track and we need more of the same, I'm not your candidate!" .... "Ask yourself, are you better off today than you were five years ago?

If Schmidt wins, we know the accusations about Diebold are a reality. She even LOOKS evil.

1. Hackett is great off the cuff, his opponent trite.
Thanks for the snip of the transcript! Hackett is really good at this and would be really great to watch on the House Floor standing proud for the people!

btw, Diebold's accusation are a reality - the vote machine is owned by a republican.

4. I know the accusations against Diebold are a reality, but the
sheeple don't.

If Schmidt wins after her opponent has this kind of spunk, then I think we might be able to start a better case against Diebold.

They seem to be even more critical than usual as documentation. I'd love to see someone try to pull a "reluctant Schmidt voter" theory on this one.

truly sickening, spewing that crap. Especially that spew about us fighting the terrorists in Iraq so we don't have them fight them over here. I wish a wingnut would ever say that crap to me. I'd have a few choice words about what the Bible says about crap like that. Many commandments are being broken over dubya's Iraq adventure. :puke:

She blames breast cancer patients saying they probably had abortions.

She even introduced a resolution in the Ohio House to "study the link" between breast cancer & abortion.

I actually think we have lots of Dems who can or could be tough MFer's, but to be good with off the cuff remarks is someting you either have or you don't!

That's exactly what I've been looking for in a Pres. candidate for 2008, but I haven't seen it yet. Clinton had it. He was much more muted, but he was very quick on his feet!

I've seen a little bit of this with Biden, but I still think a win isn't going to come from the Senate!

I'm still searching!!!!!!

Schmidt really sucks. I saw her on the CBS segment they had about Hackett and she just gave pure crap. Pro-life and pro-family and supporting the president. :eyes: While Hackett gave real answers and tried to tell about what all he believes in as fast as he could and as clear as well. I agree, if Hackett doesn't win either there are serious problems there are the people of Ohio like that type of crap with Schmidt.

48. She may deserve it, but I don't
please keep the comments appropriate for a progressive forum.

Instead of calling her a "bitch" can we call her a rude ignorant corrupted piece of scum? It's gender neutral, and won't give the impression that part of your well-founded contempt for her as a person is in some way related to her gender.

Kind of like how we didn't resort to racial slurs when that ass-wipe Keyes was running. He earned my contempt purely on his merits.

51. Sorry I offended you, but....
I truly think the word "bitch" has meanings that do not tie to gender alone. When someone "bitches and moans" about something (and I do this too) they aren't putting all women down by using the word. The old saying "Payback's a bitch" is meant to say payback is (and I'm quoting from Mirriam Webster's College dictionary, Tenth Edition) "something that is highly objectionable or unpleasant". Just as I find Ms. Schnmidt in Ohio to be.

If you think my use that word was an attempt to put down all women (including my wife and two daughters), I can't stop you. But I can't buy into your idea of purging the word from the language altogether, either.

53. It is offensive
Edited on Sun Jul-31-05 12:23 PM by lwfern
Please see the DU rules on sexist language: http://www.democraticunderground.com/forums/rules_detailed.html

I understand you aren't trying to be sexist; it's a byproduct of our society. The reason the word has a negative connotation is because of its association with females. Historically it became a term used for women to liken them to dogs - women who had large litters (sexually promiscuous), and from that mutated into slang for malicious women. The other negative variations of the meaning derive from that.

I certainly wouldn't accept the use of the word "nigger" in my presence - even though the dictionary shows an alternate meaning "a disparaging term for a member of any socially, economically, or politically deprived group of people: “Gun owners are the new niggers... of society.” Think about WHY it means what it does. That's why it's offensive.

If you wouldn't use racist slurs, don't use sexist ones. I don't think that's too much to ask. At least not on a progressive forum.

54. We'll have to disagree on this word, then.
The word "hysterical" has a negative connotation because it was once thought that the uterus was the root of certain types of behavior. By that logic, I am not be capable of "hysterical" behavior, either being funny or out of my mind nuts, because I'm not a woman and don't have a uterus. But I'm fairly ceratin the word has been used about me at some point in my life.

I went back and read DU's guidelines too. The long version. And it did specifically reference the word in question as one that I "should" avoid, but it also says that no words are automatically forbidden. Which I can only assume includes this word too.

41. Hackett rocks
I'm in California and doing phone bank work to get out the vote for Hackett. He is within striking distance of the Republican. She's a short woman who wears scrunchies in her hair and is very proud of her lips being firmly attached to Bush's ass.

Chris Matthews tried pummeling Hackett but he stood firm with a smile on his face. Good on him.

I think our side wins either way.

If he wins, awesome! It sends a very clear message.

If he loses by a narrow margin? It STILL sends a very clear message. He can run again in '06. Or better the hell yet, he's available to run as a potential SENATE candidate. Think about that, Ohioans: Paul Hackett, your US Senator.

I am still rooting for him to win. But I think a candidate like this is destined for greatness, win, lose, or draw.

I'd start one heck of a letter-writing campaign pleading for him not to do so -- and I hope the Democratic establishment would do the same. He could do the country so much better here then over there.

But if that IS his intention? It marks him as more of a patroit then the entire Nixon/Bush chickenhawk cadre put together. Period.
