2. I think it's time to lay down the facts where everyone can see it... |
|
The fact that the United States of America goes off to war "based on a lie" in no way makes it illegal, or lessens the obligation of those required to serve, from serving. It also in no way relieves Americans of the obligation to support their country, which is not to say enforcing absolute political support but rather, not making material aid to not just "hostile nations" but hostile trans-national non-governmental organizations such as Al Qaeda.
The war being "based on a lie" has no legal value whatsoever. The only remote chance for accountability is impeachment of the President. Since that has not happened and will not happen, there is no recouse at all. Let me repeat that. THERE IS NO RECOURSE AT ALL. You, I, and the rest of the world are stuck with the United States, and loyal American citizens, fighting the war "based on a lie".
I'll even go one better and say that so many justifications, truthful and not truthful, were thrown up for this war that at least some of it is based on cold, hard fact. The bottom line is that, with Congress having voted to authorize Bush to go to war if he deemed it necessary, the United States can go to war on the "because I said so" principle and it is legal, irrevocable and there's not one bit you can do about it until a new Congress or a new President alters the existing policy.
Those who look for an out because "the President lied" look in vain.
Sorry to dump, but I wanted to make a point because I keep hearing this line of reasoning and sorry, it just has no basis in law or political reality.

6. Actually going to war is a done deal, regardless of the lies and... |
|
...deceptions used to persuade the country to support going to war and the Congress to vote absolute war making powers to the president to take the country to war on nothing but his authority and his word.
However, a president who lies to the people of the United States for selfish gains, self-interest, ambition and financial gain for a very small group of businesses and institution, needs to be held accountable for his actions. That does mean impeachment and impeachment is a possible avenue of recourse.
I believe that judgment is still pending on whether or not "...You, I, and the rest of the world are stuck with the United States, and loyal American citizens, fighting the war "based on a lie" " .

3. Since it is a volunteer army |

I assume the people who are still in at this point, mostly want to be in.
If there is ever a draft, I think that would be a valid argument.
