Or should they be purely ideological? As in "I support <insert name here> because she/he/it represents my values!"

But nobody cares about ethics anymore. If it's legal (even only slightly by fudging some technicality or something) then most people won't bat an eye.
If a lobbyist had run for office 10 years ago, there would have been howls of laughter. Now we debate why lobbyists are so put-upon.
