Santorum Challenges Clinton to Debate
Sen. Rick Santorum yesterday challenged "radical" Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton to a serious debate on who is responsible for raising children --the family, the government or the children.
The Pennsylvania Republican and author of "It Takes a Family" -- a conservative answer to the New York Democrat's book "It Takes a Village" -- says he has had limited conversations with the former first lady regarding both works.
"She made a comment to me about that it takes a village, and I responded, 'No, it really does take a family,' " Mr. Santorum said.
During an appearance yesterday on ABC's "This Week," the third-highest ranking Republican senator challenged Mrs. Clinton to defend her philosophy.
"I'd love to have a serious debate," Mr. Santorum said.

4. Well in HIS case
the State of Pennsylvania is responsible for educating his kids even though he lives in Virginia.

Anybody who pulls off that kind of scam doesn't have the standing to talk about raising kids. He's teaching his own kids to be scam artists.

9. What a sick fuck!
Hillary will eat this shit head alive! She is a lot tougher than Bill, and a far more skilled debater.

Perhaps we could get Hillary and Teresa Heinz on the same debate with Santorum. Each can grab one of his testicles and pull hard until something snaps.

10. He's so desperate to take her on. He named his pathetic
little book just to do that.

He's been doing the talk show circuits with the coy sub-text of Hillary's "It Takes a Village".

He's desperate for the chance to put himself up on her level by debating her. She ought to ignore the little worm entirely. He's below her notice.

And Hillary a radical? Yeah. Wonder how long they'll keep trying that one on? I think in some places, being female is enough all by itself to be considered a radical.

11. It took a whole damned school district
and state aid to educate his children.

It does take a village. It really does.

Without a village we would have anarchy and the wimp Santorum would lose.

And God would not save him.

13. Gee!
He's already challenging a major presidential contender to a debate even though his own re-election in Pennsylvania is far from certain.

Where in Hillary's book does it say that children don't need families to succeed? What bullshit. No, "It Takes a Village" argues that children are best off living in strong communities of good families, well-functioning schools and community organizations. Places where parents, teachers, coaches, neighbors and civic leaders work together for the common good of all children.

That would seem to me to be a responsible conservative message.

17. "Serious debate" doesn't mean "publc debate."
A Senator saying he'd like to have a "serious debate" with another Senator is an expression.

If he had said, "public debate," then it would mean a formal debate.

18. I am a FORMER Pennsylvanian
(Born in PA, K through doc education in PA, first job in PA, owned a home in PA, kids born in PA, still have my "pre-need" plot in PA, Allegheny County Democratic Committee member, Itkin volunteer, worked in Itkin's District Office, left PA when they closed Pittsburgh in the 1980's)

Santorum is horrible Senator.

He defeated Doug Walgren for Congress in a massive smear campaign of the Lee Atwater - Karl Rove - Joe Corsi type.

His senatorial campaign against Harris Wofford was the same kind of smear campaign - funded by the for profit HMO's and the drug companies and the health insurance industry. They wanted to defeat Wofford because of his support or Hillary's health care plan.

Don't buy into his "Judicial nominees deserve a straight up or down vote." He blocked "straight up or down votes" for Ralph Cappy for the 3rd Circuit, and Bob Cindrich and John Bingler for the US District Court.

The guy is a total a-hole.

As a former Pennsylvanian - I would not start a new business or relocate an existing business to any state where the people would re-elect Santorum.

22. Santorum is fucking nuts
I sat down and thought about "it takes a villiage," vs. "it takes a family." What separates the right wing, from the left wing is not that we have the "government" vs. "the family" -- as Santorfuck would like to put it -- but the patriarchal structure and capitalist ideal of the "individual family home," vs. other filial structures, such as extended family, community, neighbor, teacher, doctor, laborer, capitalist, etc.

It seems that what Santorum wishes to defend is actually the Alpha male, in charge of his own tribe -- only in the "individual family home," with a patriarchal, top-down authoritarian structure can each male be "in charge" of his own domain. To say something "takes a villiage," doesn't necessarily mean that it takes "big government," or that it challenges the nuclear family, in terms of its strength -- when measured, of course, on criteria that nurture, encourage and foster warmth, caring, exploration, holistic health, education and progress.

The "village," however does challenge authoritarianism, and the monad of the "man & his castle," by making both other males and even (god forbid) women, a part of the larger filial structure. I believe Engels wrote a bunch about this, and studied tribes, and chronicled the rise of the individual family home -- that filial structure has taken many forms, but it is the anglo/Christian/whitey that clings most tightly to the individual family home, as the unit by which society is structured. I think that people like Santorum are pushing so hard for that construct/institution, that they completely ignore not only the "villiage," in terms of society, and the dread collective, but even the more local spheres of extended family, network and community -- including economic sphere. People don't watch out for each other -- the bonds between individuals are dissolved at the doors of the big box store, the chain store, the gimungo discount behemoth.

People like Santorum and the Evangelicals fail to realize this connection between local economic sphere, the villiage, and the STEWARDSHIP of the family -- preferring, instead, to cling to high-minded, mythical religious constructs, rigid social institutions, and a hearkening to an idealized past -- all the while the bonds between all of us -- not just families, loose themselves to the isolation of technology and the cold and deadened heart of consumerism.

But, of course, you NEVER see them speak about that -- just gays and muslims.

As a libertarian, I'm offended by Santorum's bullshit -- recognizing it for what it is -- the protection of the dominance of the male, and the miniature social structure, the top, at which he perks -- using his dominance of those below to soften the ass-fucking that he gets from corporate America, the company store, the fat cats, etc. I think that this bit of illusion of power is what enables him to continue producing.

As a libertarian (which conservatives know NOTHING about, btw), it does take a villiage to raise a family -- and a villiage to raise a villiage -- while I believe things should be done on a more local level, to me, personal responsibility is still taking part in an active, lively, flesh-and-blood community, and exchange of ideas, welfare, advice, help, etc. It takes a whole network of people -- family, friends, lovers, superiors, teachers, etc. -- to make a human what he or she is. The more tightly the people that forms a person are linked, the more humanity there is, in the person. I honestly believe that.

Santorum is full of dogmatic, patriarchal, archaic, has-been, fearmongering BULLSHIT.

29. Hillary had the BEST response
to the "it takes a family" line from the Repugs, when she spoke during the 1996 Democratic Convention. Bob Dole was going around saying "it takes a family" and this was Hillary's response. I loved it!

"For Bill and me, there has been no experience more challenging, more rewarding and more humbling than raising our daughter.

And we have learned that to raise a happy, healthy, and hopeful child, it takes a family. It takes teachers. It takes clergy. It takes business people. It takes community leaders. It takes those who protect our health and safety. It takes all of us. Yes, it takes a village.

And it takes a president. It takes a president who believes not only in the potential of his own child, but of all children, who believes not only in the strength of his own family, but of the American family who believes not only in the promise of each of us as individuals, but in our promise together as a nation. It takes a president who not only holds these beliefs, but acts on them. It takes Bill Clinton."
