2004..Are they Primary colors or Primary shades?
In 1992 we had primary shades. All 5 candidates wanted to go after deficit spending, all of them supported mandatory national healthcare, and they all favored different levels of military conversion after the cold war. So where were the shades? Harkin and Brown were both opponents of NAFTA, while Tsongas, Clinton, and Kerrey all favored it with major adjustments. Tsongas and Brown thought the Persian Gulf War was a mistake, Harkin, Kerrey, and Clinton were originally against it but campaigned in favor of it. On healthcare reform Brown and Kerrey supported a single-payer system, while Harkin, Tsongas, and Clinton favored pay-or-play system...in which the employer will play by covering all employees or pay a tax to get into a government financed system.

In 2000 it was back to Primary Colors. Bradley opposed any tax-cuts, Gore supported a funky $500 billion tax credit. Bradley supported allowing people to buy into the FEHBP, while Gore supported letting people from 55-65 buy into Medicare and expanded Medicaid coverage for kids. For me the choice was obvious!

This year the choice isn't so clear, are they Primary Shades of Grey..or Primary Colors?
