DU Senate 06 report, polls on your Senate race
Edited on Fri Aug-05-05 08:45 PM by usregimechange
If you have a Senate seat up in 06, sorry Black states:

and if you have an announced Dem. candidate...

How are they doing against the R likely nominee? Are you optimistic?

In MO, my state, Claire McCaskill is widely expected to give Talent a good run for his money, but she hasn't announced yet.

1. DeWine (r) in Ohio
Don't know who is the Dem challenging him. But I do know that the fundies are lining up in droves to NOT vote for him. They are still fuming about the gang of 14

4. From what
I've heard about Ohio, Sherrod Brown is expected to make his decision within this month. If he runs, he runs. If he chooses not too Tim Ryan is expected to run.

5. Here is what I saw earlier today.
"Strickland Encourages Hackett Senate Bid
Rep. Ted Strickland (D-OH), who is running for governor of Ohio, said he would "be an enthusiastic supporter of Democrat Paul Hackett running for Senate next year," should Reps. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and Timothy Ryan (D-OH) decide not to run, Congress Daily reports. A Hackett spokesperson said he has not decided on his political future. "

The headline is misleading when you read the short blurb. It follows what you said.

34. Yes - DeWine is on shaky ground
his approval rating is pretty low. There could be a lot worse senators like Frist or McConnell, et al. But, it is definitely a chance for Dems to pick up a seat. i really think Hackett would have a better chance than Brown. I kinda want Brown to stay where he is.

6. Hillary is the favorite
The Repubs haven't announced anyone to run against her. And, frankly, the NY Repub party is in sorry shape, what with them letting Chuck run virtually unopposed last year, and Pataki running like a dog from soon-to-be-Gov. Spitzer. I'd be surprised if the Repubs can find anyone worthy to run for Senate in '06.

Edited on Sat Aug-06-05 07:34 PM by DemGirl7
Because I'm not sure if I could vote for Hillary anymore, her actions in past years, have left me very angry with her, and I don't think I could vote for her, if she oks Roberts. She's the only blue state female senator who is ready to sell out women, along with everyone else, in order to get the votes of some Anti-choicers. And I'll rather waste a vote, than vote for someone like that.

7. NJ will depend on 05 governor's race
Corzine is up in 06 but since I expect he will be elected governor this November the candidate for senate will probably be whoever he appoints. Though there are some rumors about who that might be it is still too early to speculate.

A likely Repub opponent would be Thomas Kean Jr who is a state repub assemblyman.

13. Yeah Rossi
Has completely ruled out a Senate bid. The Republican frontrunner is Mike McGavick the Safeco CEO who trailed by 14 points in a poll done by a Republican pollster. Basically Cantwell is almost a lock to be re-elected.

14. Stabenow's looking great in Michigan
Edited on Fri Aug-05-05 11:49 PM by ih8thegop
She is the #3 Democrat in the Senate. Her likely opponent is Keith Butler, a former Detroit City Councilman. The Detroit Free Press conducted a poll in which Stabenow led Butler 57-30%.

Of course, Carl Levin was a former Detroit Councilman when he beat the Senate's #2 Repub in 1978, so I won't count my chickens until a year from November.

20. No one is going to do any polling here in Maine...
Every political organization in the country has Olympia Snowe as one of the safest seats in the country. She has a 71% approval rating, and her numbers are about as strong among Democrats as the GOP.

Our only declared opponent is Jean Hay Bright. She was a legislative assistant for Congressman Tom Andrews for one year and has been elected to town government. She lost her race for the State Senate in 2000 and lost twice in Democratic primaries (for Congress in 1994 and US Senate in 1996) Her web site is http://www.jeanhaybright.us/

No other Democrats have expressed any interest in being a sacrificial lamb.

22. I think the best seats to look at for a pick up are
PA (obvious)
RI (it wouldn't be a sure thing)
TN
MO
VA (Depending on Warner's decision to run for president in '08)

Anyone know if there are some decent Dems in Montana? After all Scweitzer won. Maybe there are some other strong sleeper candidates out there.

26. Likely AZ Dem candidates, nothing firm yet:
Terry Goddard; former Phoenix mayor and current AZ Attorney General. Very popular in the state.

Jim Pederson; real-estate developer and just resigned AZ Dem party chairman. Has loads of money.

Leonard Clark; ex-Iraqi vet and middle-school teacher. His platform is "bring the troops home." He's the only firmly announced candidate as of yet.

It should be an enormously interesting primary race.

I'll happily take any over John Kyl--the good news is that Kyl is a Bushbot of the worst order and for that is pretty vulnerable right now.

Cardin is leading in every poll, but not by a significant margin. Steele will be well funded and very tough to beat.

31. New Mexico
Jeff Bingaman, our Dem senator is up for re-election. I don't know who the Repub opponent might be, but Bingaman's quite popular for his work w/ Domenici on energy issues, and considering he won about 65% of the vote in 2000 and will have the backing of Bill Richardson's Dem Party machine, he should do just fine. Same deal with Gov. Richardson, though it could be a smaller margin.

'Course, by then, I'll be living in Illinois, so whaddueyecare?

37. FL: Nelson (D) is polling strongly against Katherine Harris.

Someone else just dropped out of the race on the repub side so it looks like its going to be Harris-Nelson.

Seems stupid to me I can't see any possible way that Harris has any shot in this race. She is an idiot, barely capable of formulating a sentence, which should make the debates with the articulate Nelson a joy to watch, and she can't even dress herself properly - wait, "some" newspapers doctored her photos.

Not to mention she is loathed by everyone except the freak far right-wing crowd because of her role in the last election

Whatever. She'll lose. She struggled for reelection against a Dem opponent in an overwhelming conservative district. Even repubs were trying to discourage her from running or get someone - anyone - else to take Nelson on.

But no, Harris had to have her way. Sound familar.

I can't remember the number exactly from the last poll but Nelson had a very comfortable lead.

Of course, I say that there is no way that Harris can win and then I look at Bush. There are still people who support Bush. It turns my brain to jello trying to understand it all.

46. Nebraska...They are trying to oust Nelson (D), but I don't think it's
gonna happen. Nelson has made a few bad votes IMHO, but he is a likeable guy that no one seems to tack down as a 'raging Liberal', in fact he is more of a slightly conservative Dem.

The R machine sees him as vulnerable, but Nebraskans like him, so I think he'll be back in the Senate for '06.....:)
