2. I would have preferred a hard hitting non corporate news channel
that exosed the truth. Oh well, I guess there's Democracy Now (though I keep forgetting which channel it is on Dish).

From what I've seen and heard current is an interesting idea, but seems kind of disassociated. It seems like a bunch of clips just thrown together...almost like an amaturish college channel.

17. In Minneapolis, it's on public access, Channel 17, 10PM weekdays
But times may vary in the suburbs and St. Paul. Check your local public access channel's website.

(Note: Cable 17 is NOT the same as over-the-air Channel 17, which is the second-string PBS station and broadcasts BBC News at 10PM.)

It sounds very interesting. I just hope the web will be enough to raise funds to keep it going.

3. It's one long sneaker commercial for kids with a slightly longer
attention span than the average MTV viewer.

10. public access TV with commercials.
And an absence of commercials wasn't the reason nobody was watching public access TV.

8. He didn't exactly come to the rescue, did he?
I remember being very excited about Al Gore's plan for a TV network a year or so ago. We all thought it would be about politics and social issues, or a news network.I'll always remember Al Gore as the guy who didn't fight back.

It was a chance to see some of the Canadian view of the world.

14. Too self-consciously hip
Edited on Sat Aug-06-05 11:25 AM by Lydia Leftcoast
Not a lot of substance--Most of the pods are so "lifestyle-oriented" and over-the-top flashy that I keep waiting for the tag line that plugs beer or shampoo at the end.

Segments repeated too often. They shouldn't have gone on the air if they didn't have enough content to fill the time available.

The poster who compared it to cable access TV had it right. It's cable access with better production values.

I'd in particular like to see an expose of Bushler's circumventions of Posse Comitatus and anti-demonstrator police brutality stunts.

20. Couldn't "Current" still be added to?
I haven't seen it yet myself, but couldn't they modify it by gradually integrating programming of substance in-between the bells n' whistles?

during the rest of the broadcast day.

Like a nightly newcast, a debate show.

22. So that was Gore's new Channel?
I turned it on, watched it for a few minutes, and turned it off.

I thought it was filler programming waiting for the big blast off of Gore's 24/7 counter cable channel.

I hope it develops to something else soon. It wasn't very interesting.

23. That's interesting. I hope they add traditional shows. MTV,
Edited on Sat Aug-06-05 06:44 PM by Eric J in MN
which "Current" is based on doesn't show music-videos 24 hours.

Probably less than half the time on MTV was showing music-videos the last time I watched it.

So "Current" could show "pods" (documentaries of 15 seconds to 5 minutes) some of the time, but not all the time.

25. I would like a more left leaning media but who is to say it does not go
that way by sending in pods ect to them. Perhaps it will get put out there ?? I just got a pod when I learn how to forward it to them I would like to. Could we organize a group which searchs for topics to send to Gore ? Just an ideal.

Note that they want content to be exclusive, and so don't post it elsewhere until you know if they've accepted it, and if they do, wait 3 months to post it elsewhere.

29. He's starting from scratch....
I have a suggestion for Al.... A new TV show, perhaps with Skinner and one of the several writers and journalists that frequent the Underground, with their own 30-minute TV show, called the "best from the DemocraticUnderground". All they would have to do would edit 30-minutes of posts from some of the best threads of the day and read them and comment at will. It would be interesting, in my opinion. Al, are you listening? I know you don't want it to be political at this point but it could be something really irreverent and interesting. Everybody has to start somewhere. Skinner, you could do it, right? :)

31. BUT WHAT IF........
that old badger is being sneaky?
trying to draw more young people in before slowly introducing a more liberal agenda?
After all, don't most young 18-35ers naturally lean a little left, even if they are incredibly apathetic.
Is this a sneaky way to draw in apathetic young voters into the ranks?
I think so...
Al Gore is a man with big ideas.
Even my Republican friends willing concede that he did INVENT the internet - is he inventing Liberal TV? or even better, is he inventing a liberal youth movement?

32. The best sign that he's trying to expose a wide audience
of apolitical young people to liberal issues is that there is a police brutality video at:
