"The myths of Hiroshima" by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. So much of what we learned in school about the "justifiability" or "unavoidability" of Hiroshima was merely propaganda from the early postwar period. Japan was already suing for peace, and Fat Man and Little Boy were dropped in large part to intimidate the Soviet Union from trying to occupy Japan. It was murder plain and simple, and as Bird and Sherwin note in quoting Oppenheimer, that dangerous force which the US stupidly unleashed is now threatening the well-being of the USA itself. Nukes are a terrorist's weapon, period-- they cannot be wielded by a democratic country in any way that is consistent with the precepts of a just war.
