CINDY SHEEHAN TO BE ARRESTED THURSDAY AS "THREAT"
Cindy Sheehan to Be Arrested Thursday
by David Swanson
Mon Aug 8th, 2005 at 09:49:41 PDT
Cindy Sheehan phoned me from Texas a few minutes ago to say that she's been informed that beginning Thursday, she and her companions will be considered a threat to national security and will be arrested. Coincidentally, Thursday is the day that Rice and Rumsfeld visit the ranch, and Friday is a fundraiser event for the haves and the have mores. Cindy said that she and others plan to be arrested.

his fantasies and lies, is a threat to National Security.

After all, criticizing bunkerboy is the same as denegrating the COUNTRY!

In no way do I mean to minimize what a HERO (never mind the gender words) that Cindy Sheehan is.

If not, the Media Borg will be absolutely unable to pass up video/sound bites like the ones that will come from this! (I speak as an insider, BTW.)

Edited on Mon Aug-08-05 12:37 PM by theHandpuppet
Because "several thousand more of us" won't. Oh yeah, we'll bitch and fret and scream bloody murder on this side of the keyboard, but how many of us are truly willing to make the sacrifice? How many are standing with her now? All the well wishes in the world won't keep her out of jail, but thousands of Americans standing shoulder to shoulder with her would.

It just won't happen unless we walk the walk.

I've stayed out of the Sheehan threads because to be honest, unless I'm willing to make the sacrifice and put my ass on the line with her, I feel like a hypocrite.

I'm sorry if these comes off harsh, fellow DUers, but let's take a good look in the mirror and ask ourselves if we are really doing all we could do to support her. I know I haven't. Talk is cheap.

If we truly want change, we have to be prepared to make the sacrifices, just like Mrs Sheehan.

55. Fair enough, but...
We also serve who sit and blog. I hope a lot more people show up. I can't go. I really, really can't go. I'm still home recovering from a course of radiation and I have to start maintenance treatments this week. I'm doing what I can do add to the blogswarm. That's all I can do right now. It's not enough, but it's not nothing. Cindy Sheehan needs the light of publicity shone on what she's doing for it to be effective. Every post here at DU, every blog post, especially ones that link to other posts or articles, help a little. Another helpful thing is to do searches on it at technorati. At least some of the mainstream media go there to see what's hot.

The media is already not ignoring the story and it's a pretty busy news day in the US. I don't know what she's going to decide to do, but all I can really do is be behind her from here. Thanks to the internets, that means more than it once did. And keep in mind that if thousands and thousands of people do descend on Crawford, it's going to be much easier to justify arrests and even violence than it is now.

97. Please, let's leave guilt out of it, okay? Democracy is each of us doing
our part. That's what it's all about. So if you're sick, or caring for the sick, the old, or the very young, or have other responsibilities that you can't abandon, or you're poor, or can't lose your job, or for whatever reason you can't just drop everything and drive or fly to Crawford, THERE IS MUCH THAT YOU CAN DO, of equal importance. Publicity and fundraising are two things that spring to mind. Or just writing one letter, or making one phone call--if that's all you can do. Every expression of support contributes to Cindy's well-being and to the success of her protest.

For the able-bodied and the free, GO, if you can! The more people around her, the better. But do beware of agents provocateurs--and I'm sure you know what I mean. Be peaceful, be organized, establish heightened awareness and a strong, strong peaceful spirit in everything you do. This is a very important moment in the movement against the Iraq war--and a potentially crucial one. Don't give the bad guys any excuses to disrupt or discredit it.

There have been many crises and opportunities for protest already in this fascist coup--and there will be more. And there have been many heroes who needed our help, and there will be more. We need to remain steady on our feet, and determined to recover our country and restore democracy. There are several things that are must-do's.

One of them is the critically important work of election reform at the state/local level--to get rid of these Bushite electronic voting machine companies who are controlling the vote tabulation with "trade secret," proprietary software. Above all, we need transparent, verifiable elections.

It's become blatantly obvious that the Bush Cartel does not represent the majority of Americans. Let me remind you of this: 58% of the American people opposed the Iraq war BEFORE the invasion. I'll never forget that stat. Feb. '03. 58%!

The will of the majority is being thwarted. We have no "consent of the governed." One way back to democracy is to rescue our basic mechanism of power--our sovereignty as a people, our vote--and get it back into the public venue, where it belongs. No more private corporatized elections! Free and fair and open--that's what it has to be, or it ISN'T democracy.

Another must-do is public education and public expression--as Cindy is so eloquently and bravely exhibiting. This is essential, given the news monopoly connivance with the Bushites on the war. The only way around this logjam of lies in "the news" is with people-to-people communication, and dramatic protest.

Cindy is speaking and acting for MANY PEOPLE--for millions, indeed, for the great majority of the country, which is utterly disgusted with this regime. Many people are outraged at their lies, their lawlessness, their war profiteering and thievery, their horrendous abuse of the U.S. military, and at all the unnecessary suffering and death in Iraq. And that doesn't even begin to list the ways that Americans disapprove of Bush and his Cartel. (Read the issue polls--on torture policy, Social Security, the deficit, women's rights. You name it, 60% to 70% of Americans disapprove of the Bush policy. It's astonishing.)

Cindy's protest IS democracy. And if they arrest her, they will be arresting our democracy.

Free speech and the right to protest are our birthright--as precious as our right to vote. A "threat to national security"? Ha! We know full well whose "security" is "threatened" by Cindy Sheehan. And it is not our nation's security. It is the security of the criminals who have seized our government, and the sooner the lot of them are in prison for their crimes, the more secure we will be.

39. We should go on heightened alert, don't you think?
You know - in times of a clear and present danger like Cindy Sheehan, we need to ratchet up security everywhere.

My question to God - why don't you strike this son of a bitch with lightening? If ever anyone was asking for it...

49. My thought exactly. Meanwhile, we have work to do.
We need to get the buzz here in the rest of the country to a fever pitch... and get as many boots on the ground down there with Cindy as possible... so that it's the biggest media event in a generation when the thugs put her in handcuffs.

NGU.

52. I've contacted (e-mail) two local stations, and newspaper (not much hope
there, it's the Arizona Republic..) about Cindy's threat of arrest on Thursday. If Bush is ACTUALLY stupid enough to have the grieving mother of a man he sent to die based on lies arrested (and we all know from the Niedermeyer(sp.?) incident that he IS), then EVERYONE should know about it. Could be the catalyst for the revolution. Bless this brave woman!!!!

53. once again George Bush is identifying himself as the State.
Where are the leaders of the Democratic Party on this? Are they so busy none could break away fron their own vacations and fly down to Crawford and stand with this mother of a slain soldier?

Then, let us see if the Secret Service arrests senators and congressmen.

68. Well known Dem leaders standing with Ms. Sheehan would be excellent
strategy, not that others are less significant. But Dem leaders are recognized as part of the LEGAL process currently, and defying an arrest attempt for Ms. Sheehan ups the ante to a "double-dog dare." My presence, for example, would be of no deterrence for mass arrest, but would it happen to a well known politico?

Who knows political reps that would be willing?

54. Cindy needs guards
Seriously. Those of you that care about Cindy? You had better be watching out for her, have her back, day and night, keep watch, and I mean literally. These people will do MUCH to the opposition. Please guard Cindy. Don't let any "accidents" happen to her. These people are murders, and she is standing in their way. Be aware of the danger she is in.

I'd say to her, if I could...Cindy? Get two or three large dogs, 70+ pounds. Now. And keep one of them with you at all times, everywhere you can.

Just do it you pathetic coward scumbags. She can be the hero that we are never going to get from any politician. Yeah, arrest the mother of a dead soldier that died for your lies and your fiction. You guys will be so fucked..if the vets come together..and the rest...this could be the symbol of everything rotten the Bush creeps stand for. I know, I, tight with the dollar will send money LIKE THAT.

Why does it take this poor women getting arrested? Where are our leaders? I guess it takes a mom. It sums up the total absence of real leadership we have..it speaks on so many levels.

96. Make no mistake about it: he's terrified of her.
If he truly didn't care, he'd invite her in, give her a cute nickname, let her blast off for 15 minutes, then send her away. That would end the whole thing right there.

But he is too much of a coward to even do that. He is the biggest weak-kneed fraidy-cat on Planet Earth.
