Original message
Attn: MILITARY VETERANs (DU Years of Service - 24)
Recently we veterans discovered why we joined the armed forces. It wasn't to serve our country and protect the constitution, it was to pad our resumes for political purposes like COL Hackett in Ohio and Senator Kerry before him. I thought it would be interesting to take an unscientific yet truthful poll of all the evil, fornicating liberals on DU to see just how much time we spent padding our resumes.

Please add your years of service to the total on the preceding post. Just maybe we will be able to catch up to the years of service to our country that bush, cheney, delay, limbaugh, hannity, coulter, etc, etc, etc have given. Its hard work being a chicken hawk.

Even though we are just a bunch of worthless liberals who just want to fuck and drink beer after we served our country, this old Salt proudly salutes each and every one of you.

16. BOSSHOG is correct, thats two years you put your ass on the line!
Thats two years you protected George W. Bush's ass so he could fly the friendly skies of Texas, when he wasn't to busy helping his dads friends win elections.

Thats two years you gave up so that Dick Cheney could further his education with 5 college deferments.

Should I go on?

Never knew how much I hated America until I listened to Rush Limbaugh. Thank God he straightened me out. I may have confused my love for the Constitution, and the country it helped create, with my obvious communist, socialist, terrorist supporting reasons for deciding to serve said country, if it weren't for him.

<sarcasm off>

Good News! We now have Ed Schultz on opposite Insanity here in the Peoples Republic of Tidewater Virginia. I am now able to get a traffic and weather report without first having to hear what a "pinko, Saddam loving, French Surrender Monkey," I am.

Bad News! With two major talk radio stations in the area, my two choices to listen to from 12-3PM are "Pill Popping Pig Boy" Rush, or some witch named Tammy Bruce. It's like choosing between poking my eye out with a rusty iron rod, or with a sharp stick.

like that caller to Rush is a Democrat. You know the one's that call saying; "Rush, I'm a life-long Democrat, but I just love everything the neo-cons are doing".

Don't mean to date myself, but I was on USS IOWA in the Portsmouth Shipyard when they pulled the CORAL "Crunch" (our affectionate name for it) into drydock after it hit a tanker.

Man, the tear down the side of that ship looked like the tear in the Titanic. We were lucky that she didn't sink.

damn i hope you were off the Iowa before the big accident. I happened to be stationed at NAS Weapons in Norfolk when the Iowa thing happened. A shipmate at stationed with me at NAS lost his gunners mate younger brother to the explosion. That was sad, and the mess that followed. you know what i am talking about..:hi:

132. I Was There Unfortunately
The two LN1's that were killed in the turret were on my bowling team.

There have not been many times that I've felt ashamed to wear my uniform. One was when I saw those pictures from Abu Grahab, the other was when the Navy tried to pin that explosion (without proof) on a dead Sailor who couldn't defend himself.

I've often said that the neo-con that say; "The government should have a military it can be proud of", have it wrong. What's right is; "The military should have a government it can be proud of."

It's amazing how quickly the Navy can move to remove the CO of a ship when something gets screwed up. If only our government could move as quickly to remove the people steering our "ship of state" right now.

Not that's a Change of Command I'd put my Full Dress Blues on for!!

You know, given where recruitments are today (= in the toilet), I wonder whether the GOP has considered that telling people military service is mere resume-padding isn't helpful to getting people to join.

Maybe they should start a new ad campaign: "Join the Army -- Pad your Resume!"

How about yellow ribbons: "Support our Resume-Padders!"

but then my political advisor pointed out that I was shy of the minimum accepted two years active duty padding on my resumé, so he arranged for me to be activated from the IRR and assigned to an Army reserve unit during their "Two Week" thingy (haha, that MP unit never did figure out why I was their uninvited guest for two weeks). BOSSHOG, let's keep the math simple and call it two years.

Hey, I served in both the Army and the Army reserves! Not bad for a dumb draftee that added "no value, no advantage, really, to the United States armed services over any sustained period of time."

thats impressive. FLSurferDAD, were did you put all those hash marks?

You must have had to use both sleeves, you probably had to display your ribbons on the front and back.

I salute your longevity and dedication to service...

"Hand salute (fifteen second pause.) Ready, . . .two:patriot:

166. Talked to Dad
He only wore 6 hash marks. Said he couldn't afford the other 3 on an Enlisted man's salary.
It was a great phone call though. He started talking story, I asked my wife to get me some coffee. I knew it would be a while.

5 trips to Viet Nam, 3 in country 2 on a ship. Evacuation of Saigon, Evacuation of Cambodia, and the Mayaguez incident.
Only about half an hour. I got off easy this time.

He appreciates the thanks and vows to learn how to post for himself.

139. Does It Count If You Were An Army Brat For 18 Years???
Hats off to all of you! My stint was a bit jaded in that I only had to listen to orders from MY Father! Gone now, but had 25 years in and retired as an E-9 in the Army.

All my life until I left home was controlled to some extend by what could or could not happen to my father if we misbehaved!!!

157. Hey DT, I know that feeling I did a deployment to Lazes Azores..
We were deployed on a NATO base guarded by the Air Force in little berets and toting M-16's, the Army were the Harbor Masters piloting the tug boats, and the Navy flew patrol Ops in our P-3 Orion's.

P.S. Glad you made it back home alive, I know what types of missions you flew in those old birds, risky business!!!:patriot:

155. My respect and gratitude goes out to all of you military veterans.
I would also like to salute my dad (U.S. Army, Korean Conflict), now deceased. He was a life-long Democrat, active in union causes.

And a special salute to my step-father (Marine, Korean Conflict). He also is a life-long Democrat. He was very active in last year's presidential election.

168. reminds me of a couple of quotes
"I have seen war. I have seen war on land and sea. I have seen blood running from the wounded. I have seen the dead in the mud. I have seen cities destroyed. I have seen children starving. I have seen the agony of mothers and wives. I hate war."
~ Franklin Delano Roosevelt

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. The world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children."
~ Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1953

Those who haven't served, imho, often glorify war and killing because they know it only from books and movies and stories.
