Three words why I cannot support Kerry ...
THE BIG DIG

Kerry has been a key supporter of this financially and economically disastrous project. It put more polluting cars on the road. It sapped money for infrastructure and investment from the western part of Massachusetts. It has been a lightning rod for corruption. It will contribute to the extension of urban sprawl around Boston.

> I thought you were going to say
> AOL Time Warner.

Chortle!

And I thought the "3 words" were going to be, one of:
  • Iraq War Resolution,
  • Skull and Bones, or
  • Bring It On!

Yeah, news of that tunnel's spiraling costs have even made it out here (IL, once).

I don't like that he is Skull and Bones, but I'll vote for him.
I'm a clark man myself, though.

But whether or not people thought the jobs were worth the project overall, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of families who were able to put food on the table because of that project.

Yeah, and it'll create even more jobs trying to protect such a rich target from terrorists. Yikes!, talk about an ugly scenario. Hope the engineers have planned adequately for that possibility. (i.e. better than the WTC planners)

46. Why not
Why not ask what Kerry has done for the state? Some of us in the west wonder if Kerry realizes that there is life outside Boston. Furthermore, it should be a reflection on his environmental, urban development and transportation policies.

"...it created jobs and helped unions"

but at what cost? The figure is something like $10,000,000 per job. Abhorrant spending, and I live in downtown Boston.

And you wonder how they're going to paint Kerry as a liberal tax-and-spend senator from Taxachusetts?

though I am not yet of tax-paying age, my problem with it is only that it was a gigantic work, that took a HUGE chunk out of the budget. It is quite helpful for lessening traffic though, I will say that. :-)

32. So

I suppose you're not going to blame Ted Kennedy or Joe Moakley, who were the actual forces behind getting Boston the money back in '86 or '88 when Kerry was in his second or third year as the junior Senator indeed. Or the State House, which loaded up the thing with patronage folks and pushed Bechtel into hiring construction companies that apparently employ relatives of the legislators and give kickback contributions to them. That payout scheme to the North End and South End was probably also invented by Kerry, I'm sure.

I don't see you pointing out the extent to which Boston generally subsidizes Western Massachusetts, by the way. We Boston suburbanites have the pleasure of keeping you folks driving on asphalt at all. And you probably didn't have to drive the CA often enough to see the 10-lb rusty metal chunks falling off it into the main driving lanes, or the axle-breaking holes formed when ice broke out the concrete underlay in late winter freeze-thaw cycles.

Where are Kerry's fingerprints on this public works project - and how is it worse than all the other Dem and GOP public works projects over the last 15 years?

52. Sure...but, perhaps now I won't be scared to death to drive in Boston
That's a plus of the big dig...right?

I can finally say to my sister in Concord, MA, "Don't worry about driving an hour into town, I'll rent a car and drive myself thankyouverymuch!" Ahhhh, how I look forward to that day!

By the way, is the dig finished yet? I haven't been back in about 1 1/2 years.

Of course, it won't do anything for the frickin' insane Bostonians who shove their car bumpers into a space two inches wide in order to break into line going onto an on ramp! Those people are just plain loony.

Oh, forget it...I'll just take the damn T.
