The yellow rose as a symbol
Edited on Wed Aug-10-05 03:25 AM by firefox
Many here think of the orange revolution in the Ukraine, but should there not be a symbol for Camp Casey? Think about it and listen to the song, "A Yellow Rose in Texas"- http://www.niehs.nih.gov/kids/lyrics/yellowrose.htm It has the words also.

What would be great is if people could write their own versus to that song? Surely collectively we can rewrite the song for the sake of prosperity so that all of America will "Remember Camp Casey."

If things have not changed in Texas, there are crosses all along the roads to mark the place where people were killed in car wrecks due to drunk drivers as a way to tell people not to drink and drive. People put flowers on them too as a way of remembering their loved ones. Do you think we should turn Texas yellow?

"there's a guy hiding out in Texas, who I am going to see
no one around him will tell him, so it will be me.
I'll tell him of the soldiers, who were too young to die
and tell him of the mothers who sit up late and cry."

3. "The Gold Star Mom in Texas"
Edited on Wed Aug-10-05 04:51 AM by Hekate
Well, here's my first take on it -- inventing freely, of course, as it's a folk song (I have no idea if she tied yellow ribbons around trees). I want to add some more verses later. Pass it along.
Hekate

The Gold Star Mom in Texas

There's a Gold Star Mom in Texas, and she is going to see
The man who sent her son to fight in the sands of I-rak-y
Cindy tied those yellow ribbons round ev'ry neighbors' tree
But her Casey died in Iraq, and for what she doesn't see.

She's the bravest little woman that Texas ever knew
Her eyes flash bright like diamonds, her tears fall like the dew.
She cried so when he left her, it like to broke her heart,
But Casey won't come home again, they'll always be apart.

With veterans and with families, Cindy speaks her mind
She comes from California, where people are so kind
She brings those yellow roses and vows at Casey’s grave
No other Mom should feel her grief, our soldiers must be saved

She's the bravest little woman that Texas ever knew
Her eyes flash bright like diamonds, her tears fall like the dew.
She cried so when he left her, it like to broke her heart,
But her baby won't come home again, they'll always be apart.

Now Cindy’s walking down that road in the blazing Texas sun
She says she must be face to face with Bush’s Yellow Son
She’s tired and she’s thirsty, but onward she will trod
Cindy carries yellow roses, and gathers strength from God.

She's the bravest little woman that Texas ever knew
Her eyes flash bright like diamonds, her tears fall like the dew.
She cried so when he left her, it like to broke her heart,
But her Casey won't come home again, they'll always be apart.

You guys inspired me to give it a little effort myself. Thanks for your contribution.

Here is a chorus.

There's some work to do in Texas, with a ditch to take a stand.
The heat is hot as blazes, the rain is not so grand.
You may have bliss and comforts, and watch your big tv,
But truth and change of course are the only things for me.

This link will play the music automatically- http://www.niehs.nih.gov/kids/lyrics/yellowrose.htm

I have thought about it some and think that a plastic yellow rose would be most appropriate. It would save a lot of money and it would hint at a pResident that is a fraud in regards to promoting the general welfare and the ideals of the Constitution's preamble.

Does anyone know if they still have the crosses up along the roads in Texas?

Here is a stanza.

The yellow roses in Texas, are more than you can see,
A wrong calling for righting is how they came to be.
We put them on the roadsides and say in spirit we are here,
Take your war and shove it, it's the only thing that's clear.

There's some work to do in Texas, with a ditch to take a stand.
The heat is hot as blazes, the rain is not so grand.
You may have your bliss and comforts while you watch your big tv,

4. I wish lots of moms dads of fallen soldiers would fly down to Texas

And all gather around the mom that showed them the way, and be so many that they can't be ignored or pushed around...

And why just mom's and dads? Why not brothers, sisters, husband, wives, sons, and daughters too? And grandparents?

With lots of signs, yellow roses, and loud but sincere voices.

It would be interesting to see how dufus would react, whether he'd have the guts to go meet with them and show a little respect, or whether he'd high tail it out on Air Force One in any direction just get the hell out...

They say near 2000 have fallen already, and many many more are dismembered and devastated.

If it's 25000 dead and permanently injured, that could be maybe 70 to 100,000 at least in extended family.

If only 10% of those could make it, hell, just 1%, that would be 1000 !

1000 would send a powerful message that even dufus couldn't ignore.

You can always dream

See my post:

Valerie Fletcher is the mother of a soldier soon to be deployed to Iraq, a former Marine herself, and the daughter of a serviceman killed in Viet Nam. Her husband served in the Navy and National Guard. He supports her trip to Crawford.

No one should question their patriotism.

9. My attempt at new verses and refrain
Edited on Wed Aug-10-05 01:43 PM by NoFederales
My new verses and refrain to The Yellow Rose of Texas, circa 1836—the original author and copyright is unknown

There’s soldiers in some foreign lands that we will never see,
No one else it seems will miss them, except their families.
We hurt so when they left us, it like to broke our hearts,
But if we can ever find them, we never more shall part.

Refrain:
Our dearest little children the best we ever knew,
Their eyes as bright as diamonds, they sparkle like the dew;
Their laughter pealed across the air and echoed in the eaves,
We didn’t raise these precious ones to be only memories.

Where landscapes are foreboding ‘neath starry skies so bright,
We wonder what new perils may interrupt their night.
We know that they remember, when we parted long ago,
The promise to return again, and not to leave us so.

Refrain:

But how I am going to breathe again my heart is full of woe,
The government has told me of your passing from us so.
I didn’t raise no soldier to die in foreign vain,
But I’ll clutch my heart and rock-a-bye and shed some tears again.

Refrain:

12. Just an FYI
that always struck me a bit funny and ironic. African Americans who were more white looking were called yellow. If they were essentially white looking, they were called high yellow. The song is about a "yellow" woman a guy's in love with.

15. Sort of
Yes, the lady in question was purported to be a mullato slave. But she gained fame not from any alleged love affair with her "master", but by acting to "distract" Santa Anna (of course during siesta) while Houston's army approached them at San Jacinto. The tall Texas tale has it that without Ms. Morgan's oh so kind help, Houston's army might well have been defeated and Texas independence lost.

So, nowadays I wonder if she helped or hurt us, as we'd perhaps be better off if Texas remained in Mexican hands. :)

17. All I can tell you is
On the screen that you type your messages and above the line that says subject is "Message Options." In "HTML lookup table" it tells how to link to a .gif or a .jpeg file. If you type the address of a .gif or .jpeg file the programming knows to put up the file as a picture.

If you can get your file on a website, then you can link to it with its address. It will start out with the "http://" and the "www." and the rest of the address.

You could put them up at photobucket and just put a link up here without any kind of tag. Just make sure it is a .jpeg file.

That's the best I can do. I sure would like to see those pictures. What do you think of the idea? It could sell a lot of flags and tee-shirts couldn't it?

I am working on another stanza.

The yellow roses in Texas, are more than you can see,
A wrong calling for righting is how they came to be.
We put them on the roadsides and we say in spirit we are here,
Take your war and shove it, is the only thing that's clear.

The heat is hot as blazes, the rain is not so grand.
You may have your bliss and comforts while you watch your big tv,
But truth and change of course are the only things for me.

They did not ask for welcome or take invite to leave.
The times called for action, to say what they believed.
They said to kill the fantasies and give all the lies a rest,
We came to tell a noble cause, we want the path that's best.

25. Excellent, firefox!
I love it!!
When you sing it, just tweak it here and there as you go so the rhythm falls into place. Kind of like this:

Yellow roses in Texas, are more than you can see,
(or even: The yellow rose of Texas is more than you can see)
Wrong calling for righting, is how they came to be.
We put them on the roadsides and say in spirit we are here,
Take your war and shove it, is the only thing that's clear.

All your words are still there, but it'll sing a bit better.

This is a great line--just throws Dubya's words back in his face: "There's hard work to do in Texas, with a ditch to take a stand."

Sing out, DUers.

Edited on Thu Aug-11-05 05:20 AM by firefox
I am sure that singing it enough times, will wear off the edges. If you start a thread asking for someone to sing it and put it on a website they could adjust things to their/your liking. There are people here that could make an MP3 for Email or point to point file swapping.

I don't know how you fit in with Cindy Sheehan. It could be they have talent of their own. I have written lots of words and I always say, it is for you to improve upon. I really don't know what do at this point as I only had a suggestion and I am no musician., although I did write a song called "Die You Bastard Die" once.

If you need anything just start a thread and ask for help. I am reluctant to do so without knowing if you are connected with Cindy. Let me know if I can help the anti-war.

39. This anti-war/anti-Bush movement needs a few songs ...
...that everybody knows. So far there's been no equivalent to "We Shall Overcome" and most of the chants are just raucous. Of course, part of the problem has been corporate radio media's reluctance to give air time to anything "controversial," but even so we have the internet, so that shouldn't be an obstacle. I'll try to find an occasion to sing this one.

I don't have a personal connection to Cindy Sheehan (that is, I doubt she'd remember me), but I am an associate (non-vet) member of the Santa Barbara Vets for Peace. Arlington West is an ongoing project of SB-VFP, and they have helped and encouraged numerous other areas to start their own Arlington projects. It's one of our offshoots that has loaned their crosses to Crawford Peace House to line the road to the ranch.

Cindy and her family came out to Arlington West on Mother's Day last year to participate; that's the first time she met us all. Her daughter read a poem she'd written about Casey's death and the devastation it wrought on their family; they brought flowers to place at the cross with Casey's name on it. After she left I happened to be among a group of three VFP mothers who were interviewed by someone (from NPR? I think) and I was asked to read that poem aloud. It's a cry from the soul. Other members than myself have been in frequent contact with her since then; and since that time she has been in our hearts; this chapter will help her however we can.

I was blown away that a family had come all the way from Vacaville on Mother's Day just to be with our once-a-week memorial. By that time we were getting used to young men in uniform showing up to look for the names of buddies on our crosses -- in fact by now almost 20% of the 1800-plus memorial crosses, each of which has a name on it, have been visited by friends or relatives of the fallen. But Cindy was special, and I understand she counts that day as when she became an activist for her son.

Blind In Texas

An El Paso hellhole I couldn’t higher
White lightning moonshine tastes like fire
I drank for free till I couldn’t see
I fell on the floor, what I said is
I’m blind in Texas, the lone star is hot tonight
I’m blind in Texas, the cowboys have taken my eyes
I drank Dallas whiskey and lost my mind
Had high-balls in Houston, three for a dime
Everything starts to spin, loaded on gin
I fell out the door, what I said is

I’m blind in Texas, the lone star is hot tonight
I’m blind in Texas, the cowboys have taken my eyes

San Antonio and the West Texas town El Paso
Corpus Christi and Waco, the Yellow Rose is wild
