You Say Deserter, I Say More Dessert... by Michael Moore
Tuesday, January 27th, 2004

"Friends,

I would like to apologize for referring to George W. Bush as a "deserter." What I meant to say is that George W. Bush is a deserter, an election thief, a drunk driver, a WMD liar and a functional illiterate. And he poops his pants. In fact, he “shot a man in Reno just to watch him die."

Actually, what I meant to say up in New Hampshire last week was that "We're going to have Bush for dessert come November!" I'm always mixing up "dessert" and "desert" -- I'm sure many of you have that problem.

Well, well, well. As George W. would say, "It's time to smoke ‘em out of their hole!" Thanks to my "humorous" introduction of Wesley Clark 10 days ago in New Hampshire -- and the lughead way the no-sense-of-humor media has covered it -- there were 15 million hits this weekend on my website. Everyone who visited the site got to read the truth about Bush not showing up for National Guard duty.
...
Instead, they have created the brouhaha over Bush's military record, often without telling their audience what the exact charges are. It seems all they want to do is to get Clark or me -- or you -- to shut up. "We have never investigated this and so we want you to apologize for bringing it up!" Ha ha ha."

8. Well Senator Kerry. If the truth is revealed, it'll be no thanks to you.
Oh sorry!
I thought you were John Kerry there for a moment too!
I often get him confused with others since he never seems
to be the same person twice.

out of context, to claim that Moore admitted he was
'joking'.

No one can question the General's loyalties after the arrows he's taken for Moore.

7. Alright!
Moore didn't back down one bit. And now Moveon.org has the whole Bush AWOL timeline up on its website. Curious though how the media who were so hot to get Clark to apologize for what Moore said is not even the least bit willing to investigate this. Maybe Moore and MoveOn.org can keep it out there for a little while longer anyway.

9. Yup, this is the guy Kerry said was out of line
The same guy who Clark said had every right to express his opinion, and express it he has, and now millions will hear it, all because the Republicans went after Clark, and Clark did not back off from Moore.

To quote Wes, "We need a higher standard of leadership".

10. Moore makes a VERY good point here:
quote:

When the press heard me use that word "deserter," though, the bells and whistles went off, for this was one of those stories they knew they had ignored -- and now it was rearing its ugly, truthful head on a very public stage. Without a single other word from me other than the d-word, they immediately got so defensive that it looked to many viewers like they—the press—maybe had something to hide. After all, when I called Bush a deserter, how did they know I wasn't referring to how he has deserted the 43 million Americans who have no health coverage? Why didn't they assume I was talking about how Bush is a deserter because he has deserted the working people of this country (who have lost 3 million jobs since he's taken office)? Why wasn't it obvious to them that I was pointing out how Bush had deserted our constitution and Bill of Rights as he tries to limit freedom of speech and privacy rights for law-abiding citizens?

This is the email I sent to Peter Jennings at World News Tonight.
Here's their feedback link.
http://www.abcnews.go.com/sections/wnt/WorldNewsTonight/WNT_newemail_form.html

Dear Mr. Jennings

I just wanted to offer my thanks for you bringing up the "deserter" issue in your recent interview with General Clark. Thanks to your efforts Michael Moore said he had 15 million hits on his web site over the weekend where interested voters could read about the Prsident's non-distinguished war record. See http://www.michaelmoore.com/

Please bring this issue up again whenever you can. I guess Karl Rove will be mighty pissed off at you, but you are a tough guy and I am sure you are not scared of Mr. Rove one little bit. After all if a little old lady like Helen Thomas isn't afraid to tell the White House where they can stuff it, I am sure a media star like yourself won't have anything to worry about (even if you are not a real American seeing as how you are from Soviet Canuckistan).

Thanks again and keep up the fine work.

20. In the unlikely event that's true, at least Wes stood for something.
What the hell do Kerry and Edwards and Lieberman stand for?
They didn't stand as leaders during the IWR vote.
They didn't stand as leaders during the Patriot Act vote.

They stand as ambitious men, who represent themselves and not
their constituents.

26. Clark would not think his 'political career' was more important than
defending Michael Moore's freedom of speech and that's the bottom-line reason why this man should be our candidate.

Nuff said....

16. "You Say Deserter, I Say More Dessert... by Michael Moore"
Michael, I must take exception to the term Deserter, no matter how you spell it. Literally, in order to be a deserter, you must show up for the assignment in the first place. There is no evidence that I've seen that GWB ever did. Maybe the more polite term, as Deserter is pretty provocative is "draft dodging rich kid who spent his time during Viet Nam campaigning for conservatives candidates in Alabama instead of facing drug tests and paying for illegitimate children."

Michael, please give our President the respect he deserves.

30. With all due respect
It was what you might call a plot twist. Please re-read the quote. He says, "I meant to say he's...this and that etc..."

He expounded on his original statement, and presented it as a twist.

It's a writer's tool. (Sheesh... I feel like I just delivered a lecture in Lit 101.)

the American public (especially led by propagndists like the conservative media) won't care that Moore was playing literary games

They care that they called their boy-toy a "deserter" So how do you counter?

34. I prefer not to use the term "counter"
However, I don't think the conservative media is too fond of anything Mr. Moore has to say, and though at times I wish Moore would shut that big ol' mouth of his, truth be told, I'd rather he just come right out and say what he feels, than pander left and right for the pleasure of his listeners.

Again, with all due respect, this "literary game" as you call it is not too hard to detect. It's quite standard in comedies, both on screen, television and in literature.

And finally - there are, shall we say, three camps on the deserter comment; one camp that believes he went AWOL with no explaination, one camp that believes in him and refuses to look at the compiled evidence (or lackthereof) and one camp that probably doesn't know and doesn't care.

Frankly, I believe Bush has a lot of 'splainin' to do, and if Clark goes down b/c of Moore's comments, but it brings the AWOL issue back into public visibility, then Clark fulfilled his committment to us to get Bush out of the White House.

He's had his chance to repudiate Moore's support and it didn't happen.

I don't believe it's in Clark's character to run from a friend or a fight. It's something I really admire about him.

(I think it was CNN), when asked about the "deserter" comment. He said something to the effect that he didn't think Bush was actually a deserter. In order to be a deserter, you have to show up first.
