Is Edwards pretty much assured a spot on the ticket?
He's not running for re-election to his senate seat- He's a great campaigner & vote getter, and would make a fantastic second chair to any of the other possible candidates- if he doesn't win the big chair outright on his own first. IMO None of the other viable candidates seems like they would match up as well in the VP slot as they would as president-
but Kerry/Edwards, Clark/Edwards, even Dean/Edwards are all solid tickets.

If he's not The Candidate or the Veep, he'd sure be a fantastic choice for AG in the new Dem administration.

15. Edwards is running for PRESIDENT. Don't denigrate him by
playing the VP card. That's what Dean tried to do to Clark - remember how bad that smelled?

Let's see how the primaries go, before handing out such backhanded "compliments".

2. General Clark probably has the DoD spot
assuming we choose a different Democrat for president, naturally.

17. Clark cannot be SecDef
by law, someone has to have been retired from the military for 10 years before they can assume the top Defense slot, in order to preserve the "civilian" authority over the military.

3. I strongly suspect that
the final ticket will include Edwards unless perhaps Clark wins the nomination -- he's an attractive, regional balance to Kerry or Dean.

4. Edwards also good for

Edwards is also good for debunking all this crap about trial lawyers raising insurance costs. He has all those issues in his brain. He could also whip out a bunch of really heinous stories about what plantiffs have suffered to counter stories like the "McDonald coffe spill".

But yeah, he would probably be on a short list of Veep candidates for anyone assuming that he doesn't go negative on anyone.

6. Don't think w/Clark or Dean.
Both would need and experienced Washington insider to help work w/congress. He is a good match for Kerry, though (well, and for Liberman, ok). And he certainly would make a good AG.

8. Some interesting commentary
Sat Capital Gamg(CMM) Al Hunt gave a piece on J Edwards which was complimnetary but left a little question for viewers to ponder--"If not ready this year how about 2008?"
Imusm a guest on Chris Matthews tonight was discssing Edwards. Imus concluding Remarks--"You and I both know Edwards is not going to be the candidate for president" Chris laughingly replies laughingly"He is Hilary's running mate in 2008"

In both cases the comments were just left haning in the air.

Will have to think about this a while.

9. Assured a spot on the ticket?
Don't you think you might be a tad overconfident at this point?

I really, really doubt that the VP will be any of the guys currently running for the number one spot. Despite all the oohing and ahhing here over various combinations, forget it. It almost never happens that the candidate wants one of his former rivals on the ticket with him.

There are simply lots of good possible pairings out there if you look beyond the seven (originally ten) people still campaigning.

And it's almost laughable that any of them will end up in the cabinet. Again, doesn't happen that way.

11. overconfident? how so...?
I'm not an Edwards "supporter", I'm just asking a question. And yes, I realize that most of the time, the VP spot is not filled by one of the other presidential primary contestants, but I think that this year could be one of the exceptions. This election is probably "bigger" than most, considering the level of polarization among the electorate, an the way that things went in 2000- I can see the Dems wanting to put two "heavyweights" on the ticket together.
Edwards isn't going back to the senate, and he gets lots of raves, with people's only real concern seeming to be his age and experience- something that a vice-presidential stint could help with.

13. In Edwards' case it could happen
he has been very positive... hasn't burnt bridges.

He'd be on a short list for VP, even if for show only. I'd bet his showing in those states in his own backyard would be a factor.

Edwards would make a good AG. Spitzer might not be too bad either.

12. Maybe
But personally I'd like to see a Kerry/Graham ticket. If we take Florida, we win the election.

I'm convinced that with a Kerry / Edwards ticket we could have democrats in for 16 years.... Imagine that!
