TAMPA - George DeSalvo was a young Army corporal in April 1953 when he was ordered to report to Camp Desert Rock, a remote site about 60 miles from Las Vegas.

A few days after arriving, DeSalvo and hundreds of other military personnel hunkered down in a shallow dirt trench to witness the detonation of Shot Simon, a nuclear device nearly twice the power of the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki eight years earlier.

They were just two miles from ground zero and without protective gear. They had all been issued copies of ``You And Atomic Warfare,'' a booklet published by the military that downplayed the dangers of radiation.
