Lots of soldiers there. And they dare not go AWOL, much less desert.

You could get in a heap of trouble for that. Especially in wartime.

5. Nope
Hell will have long frozen over. If there is even the slightest chance, we should all just vote green now because it would be a landslide dem victory.

10. There are a few states...
I don't see democrats winning in the near future. Those incude:

Utah

Wyoming

Mississippi

Alabama

Idaho

Texas

Oklahoma

Nebraska (then again they elected Bob Kerrey who was relatively liberal on several issues)

Virginia

South Carolina

Georgia

There are some southern states we should put our resources in, but I doubt those listed would be a great investment. Then again, with a really popular democrat from any of those states...You never know

13. We could win Texas AND Alabama
maybe, after the 2020 census.

There's no percentage in "a campaign in all of the 50 states." The last guy to try that was Nixon in 1960. It probably cost him the election, all talk of the debates aside. He spent many days campaigning in tiny states he couldn't have lost by kissing Kruschev, while Kennedy concentrated on the close states.

That's not the same as saying "write off the south." No Democrat has EVER won the Presidency without carrying at least two southern states, going back to Jefferson vs. Adams. We have to recognize that resources are not going to be unlimited, even outside the federal funds {should Kerry or Dean be the nominee}. We must pick our battles wisely.

My first tier of target states would be Louisiana (elected Democrats to last two statewide offices) and Florida (tougher this year than in 2000). Winning either won't be easy. The good news is, if we hold the Gore states and win ONE of these two, that's a majority in the Electoral College.

Second tier of possible southern states: Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee. Harder to win than the others, probably, but doable if things break right. And the one thing we know in politics is: there WILL be surprises.

If our nominee has any chance of winning Virginia, relax. He's winning.
