Limbaugh calls Native Americans "injuns" -- again
On the August 17 broadcast of his nationally syndicated radio talk show, Rush Limbaugh referred to Native Americans as "injuns." After a caller suggested that legislation introduced by Sen. Daniel Akaka (D-HI), which would grant limited rights of self-government to Native Hawaiians, was a first step toward establishing Native Hawaiian-owned casinos, Limbaugh responded, "So in your mind they're simply trying to duplicate the actions taken by the American injuns, and get themselves set up so they have casinos over there?"

Media Matters has documented at least four separate instances of Limbaugh using this slur on his program during the past year. In addition to his use of the term on August 17, Limbaugh used the term on the January 26, 2005, September 22, 2004, and November 24, 2004, editions of his program.

1. And when confronted about it, he will absolutely deny it.
As usual.

17. Makes no difference to him.
Rush on Cindy, August 15:

LIMBAUGH: I mean, Cindy Sheehan is just Bill Burkett. Her story is nothing more than forged documents. There's nothing about it that's real, including the mainstream media's glomming onto it. It's not real. It's nothing more than an attempt. It's the latest effort made by the coordinated left.

Rush on Cindy, August 17:

Apparently, what's out there is that I said that Cindy Sheehan is no different than Bill Burkett, that Bill Burkett lied and Cindy Sheehan lied...So the idea that I think that she's making it all up is just another sign of the desperation of the people on the left who love to take us all out of context to try to get their side riled up. What I said was that the media looks at her the same way they look at Bill Burkett, as an opportunity. It didn't matter whether Burkett was telling the truth or not, and it doesn't matter what the specifics of Cindy Sheehan's case are. She is protesting Bush, Burkett hated Bush. That's why they're attractive to the media, and that's why the media is willing to exploit her.

The facts are irrelevant when you are creating your own reality. Of course, someone like that used to get referred for psychiatric help. Now someone like that has a bright future in th Republican party.

I'm old, totally disabled, and only a little Native American
and I don't hold with the death penalty, but... If I had the opportunity, I'm sure that criminal coward would not lightly display his toxic hatred of humanity with such impunity in the future.

5. I suppose Limbaugh will say he was just joking around...
the way he always does. His juvenile behavior is aimed at an audience that can't think past the sixth grade. Who would want to belong to a political party that has him for a spokesperson.

8. I have Choctaw friends
When they were kids, their white teachers would punish them if they spoke their native language. The tribe as a whole were forcably converted to Christianity, and they lost their ceremonies. Many in the tribe were forcably removed to Oklahoma, and therefore lost family ties as well. That these people, who have always been kind and generous to a sympathetic white woman, should be demeaned by a drug addicted pompous coward is adding insult to many, many injuries. BTW, the gambling money the Choctaw earn is used by them to build up infrastructure, provide people with decent housing, and to attract business and industry so their people have jobs.

12. I don't take anything that Rush Gas-bag says seriously. But my Indian ...
... friends and mentors prefer being called Indians, or (in the plural) Indian people, than they do "Native Americans". For the past 15 years, I have worked with the Navajo, Zuni, Acoma and Laguna (in New Mexico), Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho (in Wyoming) and Crow (in Montana). All of these tribal peoples proudly refer to themselves as Indians or Indian people and, out of respect for their wishes, I call them Indian people also.

Several tribal leaders have said to me that when someone shows up calling them "Native Americans", they figure that they're not from around these parts. To them, everyone born in this country are "Native Americans".

Now Rush is an asshole on so many dimensions. But folks, the term "Indian" is not a slur -- just ask Indian people if you know any of them. Likewise, the term "Black" is not a pejorative term, always to be replaced by "African American". I grew up in Mississippi when "Black" became beautiful -- remember "Black Power"? It hasn't lost its beauty for this eighth generation Mississippian yet.

13. Indian or NDN
We have friends who are Nez Perce, Shoshone-Bannock, & Thompson - all prefer & use 'Indian' or when writing 'NDN.' Sometimes I say 'native peoples' but usually when we are talking politics and it involves a tribe, we refer to them by their tribal designation.
