Hilliary Clinton wants 80k more troops.....from where? |
|
Where does Clinton think these young people will come from? This isn't an attack on her, but where do these people exist?
Why would any soldier or citizen join the reserves after being called up for so long? Why would 80k more poor kids join up when the potential to be used like the Bushies have used them remains?
The Army is not meeting its recruiting goals this year, so where are these people to be found? Inmates leaving prison maybe?!?!?
What we need is some sort of mandatory public service. When I was in the service the refrain, "you volunteered" was habitually thrown in our faces. And that is the problem we have now - other than the Sheehan's of the world, not many people are willing to speak up about the use of service members and it is time to quit excusing the off spring of chicken hawks from their responsibility of sacrificing for this country, just like the poor and working class.

said on the Bill Maher Show, it's easy to say send it more troops as long "we talking about niggers and Mexicans."
I've said before, and I'll say it again, maybe Mrs. Clinton will consider sending Chelsea. And this goes for all the senators, congress people and president, they too should send their children first. then we may consider sending in OUR children to die.

Seriously, though, this is one reason I'm actually in favor of a draft. Until the burden and the loss is shared BY ALL, including the upper classes, this war will continue as long as Bush can find enough poor and working people to load up his war machine. When the sons and daughters of the upper classes get deployed to Iraq this war will stop. I suggest Barbara and Jeena should be the first in line to sign up.

She's way out there on this one. Her Youth for Goldwater experience must have included hypnotic indoctrination to return to the fold when foreign matters are at stake.

but the question that STILL needs to be asked is, where will these new service people come from? And I'm not asking about Iraq troop levels.
People probably will not join or stay in the reserves after they have seen how they are being abused, over extended and crapped on (a good book to read is The Last True Story I'll Ever Tell - it's by a former active duty, now reservist who spent more time in Iraq than many active soldiers - his unit kept getting extended while regular units were brought in, stayed for a tour, then left and another one would take its place).
Then you have the opinion of young people - if they see Bush's war as an elective and political war, they might decide to just get student loans and go deep into debt.
And so on.

29. the DLC wants to re-institute the Draft - which MUST be OPPOSED! |
|
Edited on Sun Aug-21-05 05:03 PM by radio4progressives
this is the most important issue at the moment.
The Draft must NOT be promoted and re-instituted. Citizens of every stripe across the country must OPPOSE the Draft at every turn. Activily speaking out against it now, whenever it's even hinted at (which it has been now for two years) but NOT AFTER it's re-instituted is imperative.
When I hear people on AAR hinting/discussing this notion with politicians such as Rangle and others, i really get livid with the ignorance of the broadcasters that are supposed to be intelligent and progressive. Like Ed Schultz, Jerry Springer, and Randi Rhodes -shilling for the DLC and their pro-war stance at every turn is sickening .
If this continues, i think it's really going to hurt the future of AAR on commercial radio. And we're going to be guaranteed endless war throughout the ME and quite possibly South America as in other regions around the world.

But I have no doubt, if we leave now, we will be back. I can't help but think of what will happen when we leave. We know it will be alot worse then before we came, i.e., similar to Iran, and a breeding ground for terrorists. I really don't have any good answers, this is a horrendous mess Bush created and this one his daddy can't get him out of. Don't misunderstand my post, I am not for this war by any means, but leaving those kids there, bascically as targets is wrong! But is leaving the only answer. I'm just not sure........

|
We "Vietnamized" the war by training South Vietnamese forces to be loyal to the puppet government we installed.
It fell apart. Who's gonna fight and die for an unpopular puppet government established by a foreign government.
We are attempting to do exactly the same thing now.
LBJ dramatically increased troops levels in Viet Nam, to clean it up, get it done right and win it.
When Hillary does the same thing, why does anyone think the outcome will be different.
Bush has created an incredibly giant mess. We can stick our heads further into it, or get out and let Iraqis run their own country.
It is going to be an absolute disaster for the United States either way.

41. The only question I have is, |
|
do you believe the insurgency in Iraq is as great in numbers as was in vietnam? Because we are told soooo many lies, it's hard to tell how big this insurgency is. The fact that we don't have people to secure, at the very least, the Iran/Iraq border, and they are able to funnel weapons in, seems to be a major factor in the continuing insurgency. This seems to me to totally defeat the purpose of our soldiers being there. We all know Rumsfeld tried to do the war on the cheap and they won't admit they made a huge mistake, so the kids are dying for it! Let's face it, the situation is very complex and unlike Vietnam, when we leave Iraq, there will be major ramifications to our national security. Thanks for your post.

|
Edited on Mon Aug-22-05 04:04 PM by autorank
I'm old too (haha), well not that old. Lauren Hutton says "50 is the new 30" and I've come to trust her.
You summed it up when you said "I really don't have any good answers, this is a horrendous mess..."
We maybe not but that's above our pay grade. The f'ing leaders ought to damn well come up with some. * is now at 38% approval and the CM (corporate media) hasn't really let loose yet. When he's about about 30%, he's toast. When "management" tries to put in their "guy", the demand should be (well, it should put in Gore, he won in 2000) nobody is acceptable unless they have a plan to leave.
One thing for sure, everybody agrees that OUR PRESENCE creates conflict, sustains it. So, leaving will reduce it. We just have to do so in a way that allows the least misery. Saying ensures misery, leaving allows some chance for improvement.
It is a lousy situation, worthy of the lousiest president ever!

"I can't help but think of what will happen when we leave."
What? Maybe the Brits should have "ramped up" their troops hell bent for leather during our American Revolution? After all, us Yankees are uncouth savages who can't sort things out on OUR OWN.
IMO, saying that THE PEOPLE OF IRAQ cannot get "their own" country in order is blatantly racist and American-like ethnocentric. Sort of like, we have to stay there and help those ignorant little Brown People help themselves.
BULLSHIT! I believe, given the carnage (especially among the Iraqis)the average Iraqi would be grateful for us to leave even if the country degrades into civil war for the short term.
The SOONER we get our IMPERIAL A**ES out of the Middle East, the sooner the *native peoples* can sort out that part of the world themselves.
We must leave NOW!

It is the responsibility of the Iraqi people to take care of and govern their own country. And I agree with you that most of them want us gone.
My thoughts are about the ramifications to the United States, i.e., broadening the terrorists base, new terrorists training camps, an Islamic republic similar to Iran.
As I said before, it is important not only to see where we are today, but to look at the aftermath and how it will eventually effect our own country.
