Careless People: My talking point for 06/08
The Great Gatsby
by F. Scott Fitzgerald

"They were careless people, Tom and Daisy — they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made…"

This will be my personal "talking point" for 06/08: Carelessness

A famous quote from a classic novel that, in my opinion, serves as a perfect description for Bush and the Republican leadership of today. Their carelessness is the vilest form of leadership and their lack of accountability is astounding. The consequences will last far beyond the current political careers of those now in power.

Careless with the lives and safety of others;

Careless with the reputation of this country in the eyes of the world;

Careless with the future of science and medicine;

Careless with taxpayer dollars;

Careless with regard to the struggles of everyday, ordinary citizens in favor of big business profits;

Careless with protecting the rights of minorities (pick one: gays, non-Xtians, immigrants, feminists, etc.) and even wanting to legislate inequality.

1. I would say it's willful negligence not carelessness (nt)

2. Or criminal negligence but average people understand carelessness
Carelessness and callousness are easy terms. Plus, I think the quote from The Great Gatsby is perfect.

3. I like "reckless" better, though I love your Fitzgerald quote.
Substitute "reckless" in all your points, and see if it doesn't fit.

4. Thanks. You've got a point.
I was just trying to keep it in the theme of The Great Gatsby quote. But, I agree, it is careless, reckless, negligent and beyond.
