1. The technology is there to make trucks and SUVs almost as fuel

efficient as cars. It costs about $125 per vehicle I think.

I had two vehicles. The Lincoln Mark VIII weighed 5000 pounds, had 275 HP, went 0-60 in six seconds. It got 28.8 freeway at 90 mph.

The Chevy Tahoe weighed 63000 pounds, had 280 Hp, geared lower than the Lincoln and gets maybe 15 mpg highway. Why? Lincoln had direct port injection, variable timing and lots of other cool stuff. The Tahoe had a single throttle body injector and rudimentary electronics. Both vehicles cost about the same new.

Ford PU trucks have direct port injection, but half the injectors fire at one time. Some fuel puddles on the intake and some reaches the cylinder a little late. Not very efficient.

The difference is in the cost of the electronics to make the vehicles more fuel efficient. A 2 liter minivan will get less mileage than a 5 liter Mustang. Why? Because it is classified as a light truck and doesn't figure into the CAFE standards.
