"The bodies of Sunnis are being found in rubbish dumps across Baghdad"
is the US aiding a government that is systematically slaughtering its opposition? is this the "we're stuck there" policy that Biden, Kerry, Clinton, Bayh, Dean and most other top Democrats endorse? How much more evidence do they require that US occupation is the first obstacle, not the only obstacle, in the road to progress in Iraq?

Asia Times Online, Hong Kong--IRAQ AT THE GATES OF HELL

(… Iraqi nationalism now appears to be dissolving as fearful Iraqis seek safety in confessional bonds. Patrick Cockburn has written vividly in the London Review of Books of Sunni neighborhoods in Baghdad living in terror of Shi'ite death squads that operate with apparent government sanction, and of Shi'ite neighborhoods traumatized by the unending wave of suicide bombers.

"The bodies of Sunnis are being found in rubbish dumps across Baghdad," wrote Cockburn, "... the commandos rarely try to conceal their responsibility for killings. They arrive in full uniform, a garish green and yellow camouflage, at the homes of former Sunni officials and arrest them. A few days later the bodies - sometimes savagely tortured, with eyes gouged out and legs broken - turn up in the morgue."

1. To be fair
this goes both ways. The Sunnis' hands are very dirty as well.

5. this is not about being fair
this is about allegations that the US-supported government in Iraq is endorsing this policy ... there's nothing "fair" about that ...

if the allegations are true, what then is the US hoping to achieve? even if the "insurgency" could be defeated, is this the kind of government we want to help "create stability"? i mean, what the hell is the mission over there?

i'm not making any defense of the Sunnis here ... but government sanctioned death squads certainly should call into question the US role in Iraq ...

8. You'll get no argument from me
I just didn't want people to take away that the shi'ah were victimizing helpless Sunnis. It's far worse than that, everyone is dirty.

6. Death squads are never justified and the US is backing these death squads!
If we ignore our actions because "they did it" we sink to the lowest level of morality imaginable! These Death Squads must stop!

3. civil war
of course they are killing each other, they've done it for a thousand years... and there's nothing ANY government can do about it! Just a damn mistake to have OUR people mixed up in it!

4. Yeah, we have to choose a side, in a civil war, it means cooperation
with murderers and murder.

But we have to be there.

For our national security

To uphold our American ideals

Of peace

10. The bit quoted seems to say it's not Sunnis per se, but
Baathists. That one's pretty much a subset of the other may not be notably important.
