Dem candidates make last push in New Hampshire, Clark wins first votes
"MANCHESTER, United States (AFP) - The hamlet of Dixville Notch cast the first votes of the 2004 New Hampshire primary shortly after midnight Monday, and overwhelmingly chose retired General Wesley Clark (news - web sites) in the Democratic presidential nomination race.

Although none of the town's 26 registered voters is a Democrat, independent voters gave Clark -- the only candidate present at the balloting -- a landslide victory with eight votes.

Massachusetts Senator John Kerry (news - web sites) received three votes; North Carolina Senator John Edwards (news - web sites), two votes, and Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman (news - web sites) and former Vermont Governor Howard Dean (news - web sites) each received one vote.

"I am very grateful for the support of the people of Dixville Notch," Clark said after the vote. "This is really a great way to begin the next day.""

which the nominee will need to be able to do.

4. I'm tellin ya...
It just so happens that I know a lot of Independents, most of whom live back in Texas, and to a person they are strongly for Clark. I asked them if his liberal positions bother them, they've all pretty much said no, we need to get Bush out and put a leader in, and that's all that mattered. It's like they didn't put so much emphasis on issues, they were willing to accept a Dem they didn't agree with 100%. In my anecdotal experience, I have found that to be a very interesting phenomenon. And heck, maybe it'll all stay anecdotal, but I want to see where this goes!

Great way to start the day.
