"Cindy Sheehan said the United States is not worth fighting for." |
|
This is the kind of crap I have to wade in, waist deep, every day down here in the 9th circle.
This remark was said by a very sweet but very naive woman before a parish council meeting I attended last night (don't worry - it was not an agenda item). I was so flabbergasted I literally was speechless. Even the other wingnuts on the council wouldn't touch that one. (We're at 11-1, not including the pastor. Guess who the '1' is?)
I'm curious: This sounds like O'Reilly or another one of those buffoons. Has anyone heard this as a RW talking point?

3. It's taken out of context--and yeah, they grabbed it as a TP |

she actually said Iraq isn't worth fighting for, however the syntax was ambiguous enough that she was misquoted. ( I heard Cyndi correct this on Randi)

That the system was what was wrong or corrupt.
I forget the exact quote, but it was on a video shown on ABC.
Well now, The System. The system that denies health care to poor folks, but finds the money to Shock and Awe.
The system that is plunging head long into certain ecological failure but rushes to war against a supposed boogeyman thousands of miles away.
The system that allows elections that are distrusted by a vast majority of its voters.
The system that behind closed doors decides the fate of the world and hides behind a facade of 'we know it all' while denying good sound science.
Yep, the system we have is not worth fighting for, it's ready made to fight against. Fight it, indeed, just as our forefathers fought against King George and his system.

9. That is pretty amibiguous. In context, "this country" = "Iraq" |

...but a RW blowhard would sure make it seem like she meant the US.

I listened to the clips several times now and don't see how a reasonable person can conclude that she is talking about Iraq. Her actual words are:
America has been killing people since like (inaudible) since we first set foot on this continent. We have been responsible for death and destruction. I passed on that bullshit to my son and my son enlisted. I'm going all over the country telling moms this country is not worth dying for.
The question at hand is what country she means when she says "this" country. Its clear to me that she means America. All the sentences leading up to the final one are talking about America, not Iraq. She is talking about the things that America has done wrong in the past, establishing a case for her conclusion: this country is not worth dying for. The "this" clearly means America, not Iraq.

16. Her words are a problem |
|
I listen to the file and not only did she say that "this" country was not worth dying for, she was clearly speaking about and criticizing the US. Furthermore in the file, she defends Iran's right to nuclear weapons and Syrian's right to occupy Lebanon because we have them (nukes) and are occupying Iraq.
I can't defend those statements and won't even try. Could we consider recruiting another Gold Star mother?

19. Under the nuclear nonproliferation treaty, Iran has |
|
the right to have a peaceful nuclear industry. In fact during the Shah regime, we encouraged Iran to build nuke plants.
As of this weekend, we have no proof that Iran is building a nuclear weapon. The traces of nuclear grade uranium found on equipment was because the equipment Iran bought was used equipment from Pakistan. It was contaminated in Pakistan, not Iran. That was the only proof we had of a weapons program, now it has been found to be incorrect.
If and until we find solid evidence of a weapons program, we cannot sanction Iran for violating the treaty against proliferation. Even if we do find evidence that Iran has a weapons program, will the rest of the world believe us?
How can we tell Syria not to occupy another nation when we are doing the same?

I sometimes read this type of thing on DU, where someone is in the presence of a person who says something like this, but the poster doesn't indicate whether or not he/she spoke up. Did you?

There is an art to crafting a message, especially a soundbite. If she is leaving herself open to being misinterpreted, she needs HELP.
