Should Robertson be Indicted? |
|
He clearly made a terroristic threat. I believe his show is broadcast from Virginia, so the U.S. Attorney there would be in charge of initiating and presenting a case. Anyone have a link or e-mail address to that office?

4. No but he should be a political pariah from now on. |
|
He's a commentator on a news show and while I hate what he's saying, free speech is free speech. I would hope that rhetoric like this is condemned in the strongest terms and serious repurccussions befall his group of fanatics but I wouldn't idict him for his speech.
Now, that said, I also wouldn't have enacted the Patriot Act which makes this sort of rhetoric illegal. Because it's now against the law to offer speech like this, he really must be indicted. I don't think he should be, I think he has to be and I hope this serves as an example to those who worship the Lord Almighty Robertson as to what we are bitching about when we claim the Patriot Act undermines our civil liberties.
Now will he be.... not a snowballs chance in hell.

6. He clearly suggested a terroristic threat, and implied it should be |
|
carried out by somebody other than himself. With his power over his own people, some idiot just might "do it for the Lord", but I'm not sure he should be indicted - I wish he would be indicted, but what I would rather see is him stripped of his TV presence for life. That would hurt him more than anything else. I believe a good lawyer could get him off on an indictment and that would just glorify him more in the eyes of his followers. The FCC should revoke any license he has for his show, and that's exactly what it is - a show.

9. No, he didn't break any laws to the best of my knowledge |
|
He should be dumped from ABC Family, fined by the FCC, and stripped of his tax exempt status. The appropriate governing body should also investigate his financial affairs.

12. Check out the three statutes below. |
|
You can Google United States Code, Title 18 for a searchable database if you wish to read them yourself. I was a Federal agent for 23 years, and it looks good to me.

10. Here's Three Statutes |
|
Title 18 USC 878, 1116, 1201
Section 878 deals with making threats under the other sections, which deal respectively with murder of foreign protected dignitaries, and the kidnapping of same. I could write and indictment myself. By the way, 878 carries a sentence of up to 20 years. I think there's room in Supermax.

13. The only people who should be indicted are people making real threats |
|
Like "If you don't do X we will blow up Y tonight" - - and are actually planning to blow up Y and after you catch them with the bomb they were planning to use, you need one of them to testify in court so you let 'em plead down to "making terrorist threats".
Putting Robertson in jail on a bogus charge just makes him a martyr - - it makes him more sympathetic, more politically powerful. If you have evidence that will stand up in a court of law that Robertson is actively plotting the attempted assassination of Hugo Chavez rather than shooting off his mouth, then give it to the local DA and he/she will get Robertson's racist, homophobic backside arrested for attempted murder.
If you want to stop Robertson, organize a campaign to get him off TV and complain vocally to the advertisers of any show that is stupid enough to put him on. Get other groups of clergy to denounce him. Make him f*cking radioactive.
It's long overdue.

He's got 300,000 fellow wackos who listen to his every word, every day. People like the Olympic bomber. You can't say that some nut won't wait for Chavez to visit the US and nail him. Not to mention that this guy has immediate access to the Chimp.

Imagine if Cindy Sheehan, a private citizen, or you or I had said on national airwaves or, say, loudly in a Walmart, what Robertson said. We would not be indicted. Instead we'd be at great risk of being disappeared under the misnamed Patriot Act, held indefinitele without benefit of family, lawyers or due process. Why this oddly special treatment for a religious extremist cleric who pronounced permission to murder another person for politucal motuves? Robertson, a public figure, should be ashamed of himself, as should all Bush admins and supporters who refuse to condemn his statements. Next thing you know, all who criticize Robertson will be labelled pro-Chavez and anti-American.
