Lowry claims Edwards is too Successful to be President
Rich Lowry (editor of National Review) wrote an article attacking Edwards as a successful trial lawyer. This is sort of a game they like to play. It's ok for them to nominate a candidate who's only business skill seemed to be dropping his fathers name, who was wealthy his whole life, and who got the biggest chunk of the money he "earned" through government largess. But when Democrats nominate anybody who's made any money, well he or she is a hypocrite. The only true Democrats are the poor Democrats.

And of course this is part of the Conservative assault on our judicial system.

Anyway for more commentary on this article --> http://politicalcomment.blogspot.com

1. Miserable failures become pResident
so maybe Lowry has a point, not necessarily the one he intends.

2. Government welfare is needed for the unsuccessful--a job in the Oval
Office, apparently Lowry is arguing, but only for certain people.

3. The most unbridled venom I have ever heard...
has come out of the mouths of corporate lawyers when talking about "plaintiffs'" attorneys --

4. exactly, it shows how impotent they would be in attempting to smear him
Edited on Tue Jan-27-04 10:30 AM by DaisyUCSB
that's all they smear him with.

All Edwards would have to say is "The vast majority of Trial Lawyers AND corporate executives, although they're often at odds with each other are honest, hardworking people, but many of both professions border on dishonesty and corruption to try and succeed. I was one of the former, Bush was one of the ladder. Not to mention he was a failure even though he was an insider trader, and I was a huge success despite keeping it clean"

5. well now thats a new one !
we sure wouldn't want to nominate a successful person over a failure would we ? Someone who can accomplish their goals through hard work and great descision-making, that would be a HUGE mistake.

6. One of the feellings Bush appeals to in white working class male voters...
...that you can fail and still be on top becuase that's what you're entitled to as a white man.

Edwards destroys that perception. Edwards tells voters that anyone can succed if you try, and that success also invloves reaching accross the gender, race, class, and generational divide and lending a helping hand.

Lowry is wrong about Edwards not being able to win because he is successful. But he knows what he's doing when he tries to protect Bush from thys symbolism of Edwards's success.
