Sent to the Allentown Morning Call, they called today to confirm for publication:
======= As a Christian I am outraged at the recent remarks of Pat Robertson. There is simply no way to square his remarks with the teachings of Christ. If an Islamic mullah were to call for the assassination of one of our elected leaders the public outcry would be deafening, as it should. It should be equally deafening now. Is this not precisely the kind of thinking and behavior that our soldiers are fighting and dying to protect us from? In recent times, I've frequently heard the call for Muslims to stand up, take back their religion and denounce, loudly and clearly, the hate and violence being spewed by their extremists. I agree with this entirely and feel that I and my fellow Christians should be doing the same, or we must concede any moral high ground that we have. In keeping with this, I would now like to loudly and clearly denounce Pat Robertson, his remarks and his defenders. There is absolutely no place in Christianity for hatred or violence. Period.

and yes, we Muslims ARE standing out and crying for peace and understanding-we've been doing this since 911, but the media doesn't seem to think it important to publicize the fact. But your letter is saying it exactly as it should be said-clear and concise. Bravo!

7. As are my Muslim friends |
|
I'm livid at the silence, and I encourage fellow Christians here to hammer this point loudly and lead the Fundies by example. They're defiling our religon daily and it's time we took it back.
It's amazing how differently some people treat me when they discover I'm a *gasp* Christian. I frequently hear "Wow you sure don't seem like one." Because the word has been tainted so badly by false prophets and modern day Pharisee.
Step away from the Leviticus.

I couldn't let that stand, there's no way I could call myself a human being, let alone a Christian if I remained silent. Hypocrisy ain't my bag baby :)

6. Good letter, hope it's published |

Let us know if there's any negative backlash -- though in this case, I really don't see where that might come from. Your point is well taken, explained concisely, and I should think unassailable.
Of course, any time I say that, the Repressive Right achieves a new low, so I won't be laying any bets.

8. Don't underestimate stupidity |
|
As my wife like to say, genius has it's limits but stupidity knows no bounds.
One of the things that inspired me to write it was the fact that I was listening to the radio on the way to work and these maniacs were actually calling in to defend this as BIBLICALLY SOUND!!!!
Even the host (I can't recall his name he was a sub for Glenn Beck) was calling out these fruit loops. He started out expressing his own Christian outrage, lambasting Robertson and was expecting Christians to be calling in force to agree.
His first ten calls we're Robertson defenders, I damn near drove off the road.

he sort of kind of apologized. Kinda.
So he must be forgiven. :sarcasm:
He's an asshole. Too bad something that succinct wouldn't get published.

It's a good letter. I was not putting it down. I was just responding from the point of view of the numbnuts who support Robertson and BushCo no matter what they do.
Forgiveness only applies to their guys.

I can see where it would be surprising. The Morning Call is a good, fair paper. Those can be hard to come by :)
