Congressional Democrats' ratings are as bad as Republicans. Why? |
|
According to Harris polls, the Republicans in Congress have a 32% approval rating, but Democrats only have a 31% approval rating. http://www.pollingreport.com/congress.htmWhy do you think this is and what can we do about it? How can we turn this around before the '06 elections?

We are not the party of ideas -- we are the party that opposes what the repukes are promoting. At least this is how the MSM reports it. I wish some of our elected leader would stand up and speak for the progressive wing of the party. They should travel to Crawford and stand with Cindy; voice their support for higher taxes to support social programs; oppose any change to social security; support the increase in CAFE standards to 50 MPG to improve the environment; attack Roberts for being a right wing, anti woman, neo con kook.
Instead, they are on vacation and afraid of their shadows. Most of our elected leaders suck.

can be, The service stuff was totally fake - the official records back him, the guys in his boat when he got the medals back him - his anti-war protesting was legal, open, intelligent and had at least one Senator expressing his opinion that Kerry could well be a future mamber of that body. He was followed by the FBI which recommended stopping the surveilance because he was doing nothing illegal, was non-violent, They made stuff up because there was no real dirt.

58. I don't know how to explain what happened with Kerry |
|
But it was like attacking all the things that GWB didn't like about himself, Kerry was a real war hero, GWB wasn't, Kerry was someone who put a lot of effort into making himself a success in politics, it wasn't about his name, his family connections, GWB was all about connections, so GWB did what any school bully would do, he dragged Kerry down into the mud with a sneak attack and kicked him around with lies and smears and propaganda and faked intelligence and suppression of news about Iraq, Plame, you name it, they suppressed it; 2004 was a non-election, I am still convinced that the whole thing was rigged from day one and that George Bush never had 51% of the votes, or 42% of the votes or 35% of the votes, I think he probably received what he's polling at now, and we were lied to, shouted at, pissed on but the truth will come out.

The exceptions stand out because they are so few.
We could all probably name a handful of Congressional dems who aren't an embarrassment or disappointment.
The Republicans are failing, but at least they are failing at ideas they have stood by for a couple of decades (apart from extreme hypocrisy on balanced budgets).
Bernie Sanders said something about this. He doesn't take the positions he does because they will help him win, he takes them because they are right.
If the dems don't consistently stand for things besides being the less offensive chamber of commerce party, they will implode.

33. and we'll stay in the minority until... |
|
...prominant Dems either grow a spine and stand up for liberal ideals or get the fuck out of the way. They are stink'n up the joint.
Most people don't know or care about the rules that make the minority party powerless. Most people don't know how the Repukes abuse the rules to make the Dems even more powerless. Most people don't have the slightest clue how bills are proposed or passed. They only know what they hear from their senators and reps and what is actually happening to them in daily life. When their daily life starts to suck, all politicians get the blame. The minority also gets the added, "why didn't you stop this before it got so bad?"
The repugs look bad because regular Americans don't like liars, con-men and thieves. The Dems look bad because regular Americans don't like whimpering cowards whose opinion change with every bully that casts a shadow on them.
The repukes can't stop being liars, con-men and thieves. It's relatively easy for the Dems to stop looking like prison bitches. All they have to do is stand up and fight back.
The only advantage to "we are in the minority arguement" is that all this crap can be squarely blamed on the Reugs. Our fearless leaders, with sadly few exceptions, won't even do that.

The moderates and Indies are temporarily giving up on both parties. The hardliners and diehards on each side are sticking by their guys.
Indies have leaned Republican for so long, and moderate Democrats are been such Republican fifth columnists that this doesn't seem so bad to me. I think they're getting a lot of the conservative propaganda crap they believed out of their heads- all the semimythical stuff they've believed or 'known'- about Democrats and Republicans. Republicans being about lower taxes, better at war, etc.
When a mythology dies it means a crisis of faith for those who believed in it.

31. Where are the Democratic ideas, |
|
apart from "We don't like the Republican ideas"?
Democrats are in their most weakened position in decades. For the first time in 50 years, we don't control either the House or the Senate and we don't have the White House.
Even during the lean years of the past, when Republicans dominated the White House, we held the House and usually the Senate. We could force Republican presidents to alter their more unsavory ideas. At the very least, we could force them to compromise. During the Clinton years, when we didn't control Congress, the executive branch could keep the Republican Congress from becoming too conservative.
Now, for the first time in decades, we're utterly powerless. We can't force the Republican president to do anything unless a few Republicans go along with us.
And we're not used to it.
The Democratic Party is in a position now where it is the party of reaction rather than proaction. Rather than proposing a long-term agenda for America, we're busy reacting to the Republican long-term agenda.
The American people have had nearly four years of Republican domination in Congress and it's pretty evident that they're dissatisfied with the results. But as long as Democrats aren't presenting an alternative, we're not going to win major victories.
Republicans in 1994 were determined to win the House and the Senate. Thus the Contract with America. It may have been utter bullshit but it presented an alternative to the Democratic agenda and the American people got behind it.
If we want to win in '06 and '08, we have to stop saying "The Republicans are screwing up. Vote for us" and start saying "This is what the Democrats will do. Vote for us."

You are right. A Democratic "Contract with America" is long overdue. Action, not Reaction How is that hard to understand?
It's our stagnant leadership that won't articulate it and stand behind it.
If you've haunted DU or the net roots any length of time you've probably seen 100 different lists of bullet points that spell out a pretty damn good Democratic platform. All of them are very similar.
You could write one yourself or any two or three DUers could crank one out that was simple and easy to sell. Our leaders won't do it. Some say their silence is strategic; let the repugs hang themselves then we'll sweep in and save the day.
Bullshit...
All our necks are in the noose the Repugs have woven. Time to fight back like our lives and Nation depended on it was 5 years ago. I've been waiting and waiting for the big name Dems to strike back and they never did. I'm not buying the "we must stay unified at all costs" mantra.
I'm going to work to get populist Dems with some conviction elected. They can be DLC, moderates, or flaming liberals, but they will not be spineless mumbling cowards who step into the ring waving the Marquis of Queensbury rules while Republicans beat them with a folding chair.

Congress has always been held in low esteem when people are polled. These numbers are probably not exceptional, and at least we're not considered all that much worse than the Republicans.
What to do about it? Not much-- it's always been a great American sport to diss politicians, particularly Congress.
But, we have to remember that old maxim-- "All politics is local." Somehow, all Congresscritters suck, but "MY" congresscritter is just peachy keen.
So, we ignore these polls and just go out and run our people with the people who count-- their voters. Maybe the locals do care a bit about abortion, gay marriage, Iraq, and other things that get us all up in a twist, but what they REALLY care about are the potholes, the price of gas, how their schools are doing, their property taxes, local job growth and all that other stuff that affects them directly.
And that's what we run on.

Senators and Congress-persons are elected in their own home states, and few people are going to be pleased with the whole Congress as a group. That's why Dean, Kerry and others are working for and supporting elections at the state level. Win one state at a time, and the difference will show in Washington.
To everyone who has been complaining about the Dem Party on this thread:
I hope all of you personally get out and go to your local Dem county meetings and GET INVOLVED. We need warm bodies all over the United States to pitch in now, not wait until the next presidential campaign season. It doesn't matter how young or old you are, rich or poor, educated or not--there is a job you can do, even if only serving coffee and muffins to campaign workers! Nobody has a right to complain who is not involved!
